Arcangelo Foti

With great sorrow, the Foti family announces the passing of our beloved Patriarch, Arcangelo (Angelo) Foti on December 10, 2021 at age 90. Surrounded by his children and wife, Arcangelo passed peacefully knowing he was loved immensely.

Angelo is survived and will be lovingly remembered and missed by his loving wife of 61 years and love of his life,Olga, children Tony (Candida Cerri) of Murfreesboro, TN, Joe (Claudia) of Treherne, MB, Carmela-Crystal (Mike Syring) of Abbotsford, BC and Angelo Jr., (Carrie) of Winnipeg, grandchildren Justin Foti, Devyn Foti-Dickinson (Blake), Michael Foti, Dayne Foti (Taylor) and Angelina Foti. Also left to mourn his brother Franco Foti (Antonella), sister-in-law Carmela Foti (Rocco) and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends all over the world.

Our Papa was predeceased by his parents Antonino and Giuseppina Foti, siblings Rocco Foti, Carmela Militano (Domenico), and Domenica Nocida (Cosmo).

Born in Cosoleto, Reggio Calabria Italy in 1931, Dad dreamed of a way to make a better life for himself and his future family. Leaving southern Italy as a young man, Dad went North with nothing more than an entrepreneurial spirit and incomparable work ethic which carried him his entire life. His early life journeys included selling/growing flowers in Legnano and Ventimiglia, logging in Valle d’Aosta and various other business ventures. In 1956, he decided to join his sister in Winnipeg and immigrated to Canada taking various jobs including working as a dishwasher at the Hotel Fort Garry, until he found a passion in concrete. He returned to Italy where he met the love of his life while waiting for a bus connection in a nearby town. She was watering flowers on the balcony when he saw her and it was love at first sight. Within 5 weeks he had married Olga and off to Canada they went. In June of 1960, they arrived in Halifax Pier21 aboard the Olympia with 2000 plus other immigrants seeking the same better life that he was.

It wasn’t long after his arrival, that he founded the Manitoba Concrete Finishers Association and started Italian Concrete and Excavation, a company that not only provided the better life he wanted but one that would come to employ and assist other immigrants wanting to come to Canada for the same reasons. He took in many newcomers, providing employment, housing and creating lifelong friendships. His sons worked alongside him until he finally retired at age 84. His sons continued the business and he would often come to the job sites and review their work to ensure it was up to his standards.

Papa had a wonderful sense of humour and a passion for recounting stories of his life with an animated flair that only he could do. Although diminutive in stature, his personality was larger than life and his gregarious manner would win everyone’s heart. Always joking and clowning around, it was difficult to take a serious picture of him and at the last second, he would give his trademark “gringia”. He always had a twinkle in his eyes, loved people and gave selflessly.

First and foremost, he was a family man always there to help, guide and stop at nothing to protect his own. He was immensely proud of his children and their accomplishments and always reminded them that they could do anything they put their minds and dedication to. He enjoying entertaining friends in his home, playing cards, and sharing his love of life. He loved gardening, with particular attention given to his beans and tomatoes and shared his bounty of garden vegetables with everyone. He enjoyed making wine from grapes and teasing other winemakers on how much better his wine was than theirs. He was artistic, open-minded and in awe of today’s technology that allowed him to keep in close touch with his distant family using video chat. He was always present in the moment and lived a fulfilling life.

He will be forever missed by all those that loved him. The family asks that you reminisce about all the funny stories and great times we shared with him and know that one day we will all be reunited in paradise.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, December 162021, at 10:00 a.m. in Holy Rosary Church, 510 River Ave. Winnipeg, with Rev. Fr. Sam Argenziano Presiding at the Eucharist. Con grande dispiacere la famiglia Foti annuncia la scomparsa dell’amato Patriarca Arcangelo (Angelo) Foti avvenuta il giorno 10 dicembre 2021, all’eta’ di 90 anni. Circondato da moglie e figli, Arcangelo e’ spirato pacificamente, sapendo di essere profondamente amato.

Angelo lascia e sara’ amorevolmente ricordato dalla sua devota moglie da 61 anni e amore della sua vita, Olga, dai suoi figli Tony (Candida Cerri) di Murfreesboro, TN, Joe (Claudia) di Treherne, MB, Carmela-Crystal (Mike Syring) di Abbotsford, BC e Angelo Jr., (Carrie) di Winnipeg, dai nipoti Justin Foti, Devyn Foti-Dickinson (Blake), Michael Foti, Dayne Foti (Taylor) e Angelina.Lascia inoltre a compiangerlo suo fratello Franco Foti (Antonella), la cognata Carmela Foti (Rocco) e molti nipoti, cugini e amici in tutto il mondo.

Nostro Papa’ e’ stato preceduto dai suoi genitori Antonino e Giuseppina Foti, dai fratelli Rocco Foti, Carmela Militano (Domenico), e Domenica Nocida (Cosmo).

Nato a Cosoleto, Reggio Calabria, Italia nel 1931, Papa’ sognava un modo per creare una vita migliore per se’ stesso e la sua futura famiglia. Lasciata l’italia del sud da giovanissimo, Papa’ si trasferisce al nord con nient’altro che un grande spirito di inziativa e una incomparabile attitudine al lavoro che lo hanno contraddistinto per la sua intera vita. Le sue prime esperienze sono state: coltivare e vendere fiori a Legnano e Ventimiglia, taglialegna in Valle d’Aosta, e altri generi di lavori. Nel 1956 decide di raggiungere sua sorella a Winnipeg ed emigra in Canada accettando vari lavori, incluso il lavapiatti all’Hotel Fort Garry, finche’ non scopre la sua passione per i lavori in calcestruzzo.

Torna in Italia, dove incontra l’amore della sua vita alla fermata del bus in un paese vicino. Lei stava innaffiando i fiori sul balcone, quando si videro e fu amore a prima vista. Dopo cinque settimane Angelo sposa Olga, e via insieme, in Canada. Nel giugno del 1960 arrivano ad Halifax, molo 21 a bordo della Olympia con altri 2000 e piu’ immigrati in cerca, come loro, della stessa vita migliore.

Non molto dopo il suo arrivo, fonda la Manitoba Concrete Finishers Association e inizia la Italian Concrete and Excavation, una Compagnia che non solo fornisce la vita migliore che voleva, ma impiega e aiuta altri migranti desiderosi di arrivare in Canada per le stesse ragioni. Ha accolto molti nuovi arrivati, fornendo loro un impiego, un alloggio e creando solide amicizie.

I suoi figli hanno lavorato con lui fino al suo pensionamento a 84 anni. Hanno continuato l’attivita’ e lui spesso andava a controllare che il lavoro fosse fatto al livello di qualita’ richiesto.

Papa’ aveva un raffinato senso dell’umorismo e una passione nel raccontare le sue avvenure di vita con uno stile tutto suo. Anche se non molto alto fisicamente, la sua personalita’ era sconfinata e la sua socievolezza ha conquistato il cuore di molti.Sempre allegro e scherzoso, era difficile scattare una foto seria e, all’ultimo secondo, mostrava la sua speciale ‘gringia”. Ha sempre avuto una scintilla nello sguardo, amato gli altri e donato con generosita’.

Prima di tutto, era un uomo devoto alla famiglia, sempre pronto ad aiutare, guidare, e non fermarsi davanti a niente per proteggere i suoi cari. Era immensamente orgoglioso dei suoi figli e dei loro risultati raggiunti, e ha sempre ricordato loro che potevano realizzare qualunque cosa mettendoci dedizione e concentrazione. Gli piaceva intrattenere i suoi amici a casa per giocare a carte e condividere il suo amore per la vita. Gli piaceva il giardinaggio, con particolare dedizione a fagioli e pomodori e ha sempre spartito con tutti il suo bottino di verdure. Gli piaceva fare il vino con la sua uva e stuzzicare altri vinai su quanto il suo vino fosse meglio del loro. Era artistico, di mente aperta e al passo con la tecnologia moderna per video chattare con i parenti lontani. Era sempre presente e ha vissuto una vita soddisfacente.

Manchera’ sempre a coloro che l’hanno amato. Che ognuno lo ricordi in un momento felice, con le sue buffe storie e i bei momenti passati insieme, sapendo che un giorno saremo tutti riuniti in Paradiso.

Riposa in pace Papa’ . Sarai sempre nei nostri cuori.

La Santa Messa a suffragio si terra’ Giovedi’ 16 dicembre 2021 alle ore 10:00 allaHoly Rosary Church, 510 River Ave. Winnipeg. La funzione verra’ celebrata dal Rev. Fr. Sam Argenziano.

Il caro defunto verra’ quindi sepolto al Chapel of Eternal Memories Mausoleum, 1501 Waverley Street, Winnipeg.
