He had very fond memories of growing up in Riverview and having numerous friends in the community. He attended Riverview School and then Churchill High School, of which he was very proud.
After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Manitoba where he obtained his Bachelor of Sciences degree. After much angst as to what to do next, he decided on a career in chartered accountancy and was hired to article as a student with the former Price Waterhouse. He worked there for several years in Winnipeg attaining his CA degree and then transferred to the Toronto office where he developed tax specialization skills. Not being happy with living in Toronto, he moved back to Winnipeg and joined a predecessor CA firm of KPMG. He became a senior tax partner with KPMG and had a long successful career there until his retirement. While at KPMG, he managed to find the time to be a part-time lecturer on taxation at the University of Manitoba and teaching professional development courses at the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Manitoba. After retiring from KPMG and not being ready to fully retire, he joined Wellington West Capital and became a stock broker which he enjoyed doing for a few years. The yearn of CA public practice lured him back to the profession as he joined a local CA firm, BCCA, as an associate where he stayed for several years before forming his own CA firm that he ran on his own until his passing. Art was extremely proud of his CA degree and the profession plus the honourary FCA degree that he received in recognition of outstanding service to the profession and the community.
Along with a very active professional life, Art was an extremely active volunteer at a senior level with major local charitable and non-profit organizations. He was Past-Treasurer of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce and Balmoral Hall Private School and Past-President of both the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and Manitoba Museum. He received the Investors Group Arts and Culture Award for distinguished volunteer service in the community. Art devoted many countless hours and years dealing with issues affecting the organizations that he volunteered for and loved the association with other volunteers and staff.
Art was an enthusiastic fan of the Winnipeg Jets, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, New York Yankees, and New York Giants. He enjoyed texting with his sports buddy and brother-in-law Terry during and after many sports games. In their minds, they had the solutions for any problems confronting their teams. Art experienced a thrill of his lifetime when he and Allison travelled to New York City and attended a game of his beloved Yankees in the famous Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. Much to his delight, the Yankees won. Art also enjoyed his and Allison’s trips to Puerto Vallarta and Las Vegas, always meeting new friends wherever he and Allison travelled.
It was Art’s desire that donations in his memory be made to either the Manitoba Museum Foundation, 190 Rupert Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3B 0N2 or to the School of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, 380 Graham Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4K2.
