Carol Olga Kirk (née Shapka)
Born: June 15, 1931
Passed: August 20, 2025
Age: 94 years old
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Mom, Baba, and Great Baba. Carol passed peacefully on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, at the age of 94, with her family by her side.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Kenny (Janice), Allyson (Ken), and Den. She will also be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren: Jillian (Nathan), Tanis (Stefan), Garrett (Kara), Lyndsay (Dylan), Erik (Erin), Kayleigh, Nathan, and Oliver, and her great-grandchildren: Sienna, Nolan, Wolff, Magnus, Nora, and Tatem. Carol is also fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews, as well as by Kim, a dear friend who brought much joy and comfort to her life.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ken, of 58 years, her parents, all seven of her siblings, and several nieces and nephews.
Family was at the heart of Carol’s life. Her nearby daughter and family were especially fortunate to have her close, always ready to be spoiled by her at every opportunity. Even when distance separated her from loved ones, she was filled with joy whenever family came to visit. She welcomed them with open arms and a full table, often serving her famous cinnamon buns and homemade perogies, ensuring no one ever left hungry. She especially treasured visits from her sons, when the deep bond they shared was unmistakably apparent as they gathered with their families in warmth and love.
As a proud Baba, Carol was always there to support her grandchildren - attending games, concerts, graduations, and weddings whenever she could, despite the challenges distance sometimes posed.
Carol lived independently in her home until the notable age of 92. She then spent two years at Thorvaldson Care Center before moving to Kildonan Personal Care Home for her final weeks. Throughout these transitions, Carol was surrounded by compassionate and attentive caregivers. Her family is deeply grateful to all who supported her during this time, especially the dedicated teams at both care homes and Concordia Hospital, whose kindness and care made a meaningful difference in her final days.
In lieu of a service, the family will celebrate Carol's life privately. If you wish to honor her memory, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba or a charity of your choice.
