Catalina V. Matias, passed away with her husband by her side on January 1st, 2024. Catalina's life story is one of resilience, love, and unwavering dedication to her family and community. Born on February 13, 1947, in Lalakan, Bulacan, Philippines, Catalina's journey was one marked by bold choices and a deep commitment to caring for others.
As a young woman, Catalina envisioned a life of service as a nun. However, destiny had other plans for her when she met Angel Matias, the man who would become her beloved husband. Together, they embarked on a new chapter in Canada, where they raised their cherished daughter, Michelle. It was in Canada that Catalina demonstrated the full extent of her tireless work ethic. As a new immigrant, she faced numerous challenges but faced them with remarkable strength and determination. She worked hard, not just to build a life for her family, but to create a home that was a beacon of hope and support for others.
For two decades, Catalina dedicated herself to housing and caring for some of society's most vulnerable members. Her unwavering support and guidance earned her the affectionate title of "Mother" from many who had the privilege of knowing her. She was not just a caregiver; she was a steadfast advocate, a pillar of strength and resilience for those around her.
Catalina's life was a testament to the power of the human spirit to overcome adversity and to live with purpose and dignity.
The poem "Invictus" by William Ernest Henley, captures the essence of her indomitable spirit:
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance,
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.
She lived her life as the master of her fate and the captain of her soul. Her legacy of love, resilience, and compassion will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched. We honor her memory today, not just as a beloved wife, mother, sister and caregiver, but as an embodiment of the strength and spirit that define the best of humanity.
As we remember Catalina, let us also recognize the countless unsung heroes like her who make our communities and our world a better place through their everyday acts of kindness and courage. Her life reminds us that one person's strength and compassion can indeed make a profound difference. Her memory will continue to inspire us all.
