Gerry passed away peacefully, with his family by his side on Tuesday, August 28, 2012. He will be greatly missed by Sandy, his wife of 52 years. He is lovingly remembered by his three boys and precious grandchildren; Gordon (Cheryl), daughter Amanda and son Jordan, Gary (Laurie), daughter Kaleigh and son AJ and Glen (Diana) and two daughters, Julia and Jenna. He also leaves behind his sisters Pat Knight and Florence (Glen) Catlin and several nieces and nephews. Gerry was predeceased by his parents, Evelyn and Maurice, his brother Jack and brother in law, Harry Knight.
Gerry was born in Winnipeg on December 5th, 1938 and spent most of his early years growing up in St. James. He attended Assiniboine School and St. James Collegiate where his lifelong relationship with Sandy began. He started working at Public Press in 1955 as an office boy and went on to complete a Compositor apprenticeship course and worked in the composing room. He moved on to become the Production Manager of the Country Guide and Cattleman Magazine, retiring in October 1994 after thirty nine years with the company.
He was a great sports enthusiast and loved attending his sons’ hockey games when they were young. He spent many hours at the Deer Lodge community Club, shovelling the rink off so it was “game on”. He was involved with the St. James Major Jr. Canucks Hockey team and the Lions Hockey Tournaments, spending hours producing their programs. A special moment for Gerry and his boys was when his son Gary scored a goal in the NHL with the San Jose Sharks. Gerry continued to watch his grandchildren’s love for sports whether it was hockey, golf, volleyball, dance or ringette. One of his most enjoyable times in the later years was watching NFL football with his son Gord in Orlando, Gary in Kansas City or Glen in Winnipeg. Sundays will never be the same without him.
Gerry and Sandy enjoyed their retirement together to the fullest. Summers were spent at Falcon Lake with many family get-togethers, friends, golf and boat rides in the Checkmate. They always stopped in Kansas City before heading to Florida for the winter. While in Florida they took several cruises to the Caribbean and Europe. Gerry found one of “the best places in the world” in Labadee but most of all Gerry loved being around his family.
According to Gerry’s wishes, cremation and a private family interment service has taken place. We thank all of the Doctors and Nurses at Health Sciences Center, St. Boniface Hospital and Riverview for everything they did for Gerry. If one wishes, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Gerry’s memory to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Wpg, MB, R3E 0V9.
Goodbye my family, my life has passed,
I loved you all to the very last.
Weep not for me but courage take,
Always continue to love each other for my sake.
For those you love don’t go away,
They walk beside you every day.
