David (Davey) passed away on the morning of January 19th at the Concordia Hospital. His untimely passing was unexpected and a great loss to all that knew him. He has now gone to be with his true love Donna.
Left to mourn are his sons; Scott (Roxanne) and Brent, grandsons; Evan and Nicolas, great -grandson; Maurice, brother; Gordon (Pat), nephews; Stuart and Jarette.
After serving in the Navy for 5 years with his lifelong friend Cliff Dawson, Dave joined the Winnipeg Fire Department on April 16, 1958. It was here that he secured a 36-year career, retiring badge #427 as a District Chief on May 29, 1994. He was also proud to serve as an Honour Guard during his tenure.
His early retirement years were spent travelling to sunny destinations. Not for the sun and the sand, but for the golf. Both he and Donna loved the game and were avid golfers, each holding a local membership. Dave even owned his own cart (painted fire engine red)! Their favourite place to be after a day on the course was the three-season room they had built, fondly referred to as the “Arizona Room”. In reference to Arizona, a special “thank you” to Jim and Sandy for hosting his stay in Mesa. We didn’t expect it would be his last trip.
Dave was a loving and devoted husband. When Donna took ill, he never left her side. No surprise as rarely did you find one without the other. Devoted to her memory, he carried her picture with him at all times and when he got a smart phone, it was her photo that adorned his home page. There was no one on earth that could take her place.
After Donna’s passing, he found solace with his friends, his buddies. Like clockwork, Davey and company (you know who you are) could be found at “the office” where he could be overheard telling a joke or three. And although the punch line was often predictable, folks would get a chuckle and delight from hearing him say it in a Scottish brogue. Aye lad! Aye lassie!
COVID prevented many of Davey’s friends from visiting him during his stay in the hospital. Fortunately, an ease in restrictions allowed a select few to see him. Thank you to Frank, Russell, Grant and brother Gord. Know that during the pandemic your presence was a true blessing during these difficult times! And to Katherine…Dave looked forward to your daily phone calls during his hospital stay. Your friendship was special to him.
There is an empty chair at the table now, but Davey’s memory is still present. He will not be forgotten.
A service will be held at the Rockwood A.N.A.F., Unit 303 at 341 Wilton Street on Sunday, August 14th at 1 pm. Honour Guard in attendance. If able, please come and share in the memories.
If friends so desire, donations can be made to Cancer Care Manitoba.
