February 2, 1920 – July 27, 2015
Dorothy Greene passed away peacefully at Tuxedo Villa in Winnipeg on July 27, 2015. Her 95 years were seldom marked by illness and her end was without either disease or pain.
Dorothy was born in Ottawa, Ontario on February 2, 1920 to parents Edith and Alfred Wicker. There she grew up and met her husband Russell Greene. They married in St. John’s, Newfoundland in 1942 where Russell was in the Canadian Navy and Dorothy ran the USO for the American Navy. After the war, they moved to Winnipeg, the only members of their families to leave Ontario.
Dorothy ran a clerical business from home while raising her two children and when her youngest was eleven, she took a job at the University of Manitoba payroll department, retiring in 1980.
Dorothy was predeceased by her husband in 1996 after 54 years of happiness. She once told the family “I never fell out of love.” She is survived by:
Her son, Russell (Sandra), and his children Russell (Julie), Cheyenne (James), Marshall (Elena), and Jonathan.
Her daughter Lesley and her children Craig (Heather) and Gillian (Sandy).
Her sisters, Ivy and Gladys Wicker.
Niece and nephews Wendy Greene, Alfie (Beverley) and Bill (Linda) Wicker.
And her beloved great–grandchildren Mitchell, Alana, Hailey, Russell (IV), Zachary, Alexander, Oswald and, a recent adoption, Jonathan. Plus triplets due in a few months to Gillian and Sandy!
Dorothy was the original liberated woman… and loved her husband unreservedly all her life. Dorothy never wanted children… and was a great mother, supportive and nurturing. Dorothy was a career woman first and foremost… and spent every spare moment with her family. She came to Manitoba as one of a couple; now there are 22 (soon 25) of us, all doing well. Bravo, Dorothy!
In the last years of her life, Dorothy wanted nothing more than to be reunited with her beloved Russell. She was absolutely certain of that happening and today we rejoice – she has gotten her wish!
The family would like to thank the staff at Tuxedo Villa for taking such good care of Dorothy the last two years. She loved the staff, constantly bragged about the food and was genuinely happy there.
Dorothy’s ashes were interred in the Columbarium at St. John’s Anglican Cathedral. A celebration of her life will be held on Wednesday, August 5 at 1:00 pm at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church Woodhaven, 2700 Portage Avenue.
The family graciously declines flowers; in lieu, a donation may be made to the Salvation Army or to St. Andrew’s Anglican Church Woodhaven.
