"BIOGRAPHY"
ELSE MARTA WEPPLER (NEE MUNZ)
Mrs. Else Marta Weppler was a down to earth individual. To everyone around her, she seemed to be a happy person , and willingly shared that joy with anyone whose life she touched. For Else, bringing out the best in any situation was as easy as offering a smile, a witty remark or the twinkle of an eye.
Else was born on January 5, 1920 at home in Asperglen, Germany. Her parents were Jakob and Maria Munz and was raised on the family farm in Asperglen, Germany. She had to work on the farm at an early age just like the rest of her siblings. Her very favourite sister was Emilie and loved working alongside her. They even sang some of the pop songs of the 30"s while doing their chores.
Else was fairly easygoing and fun loving. She seemed to have a knack for bringing compromise and erasing tense situations around the house. Due to a generous dose of common sense, she managed to find a satisfying solution to basic problems. Having to deal with three sisters and nine brothers was not an easy task.
She had an outgoing personality, a lively imagination and a mellowed energy for life, that allowed her to be constantly on the go. As a result, Else experienced a rather active childhood, and this suited her very well. She took care of the animals, chickens and the garden on the family farm. Memorable achievements included being able to finish Grade 7 (which in her time very few people could afford because of monetary constraints) and apprentcing as a maid and housekeeper (by cooking, cleaning and running a full household) for a military family.
She was drawn to individuals , using her gregarious, adaptable and outgoing personality to captivate. This quality allowed Else to continually develop new relationships, ever widening her circle of friends. She delighted in her role among all her acquaintances. Whether it was a story, a joke, a song or just plain fooling around, Else was always right at home. She utilized her interest in others as a great way to connect with them. After arriving in Winnipeg in July 1953, she became friends with the Meyers now in BC and the Syrings now in Toronto. They loved playing cards together until the wee hours of the morning. Of course there was never any shortage of snacks to keep things going.
The gift of being emotionally expressive and outwardly affectionate made Else very easy to approach. On March 22, 1941 Else exchanged wedding vows with Karl Weppler at the Johannes Church of Rudersberg, Germany. She was always sensitive to other people’s feelings, and that was especially true in the marriage.
Else was blessed with three Children, two daughters Margaret and Heidi and son Charlie, seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren, Lorenz, Diana, Stewart, Carl, Helen, Tanya, Lindsay, Jordyn, Melissa, Mason, Damien, Lyric and Sadie. Else had the ability to focus her attention on the present moment. If she was spending time with the kids, that’s where all of her attention was directed. She could make any of them do what was just and correct , but could spend hours entertaining them with fun and creative play.
At work, as in life, Else was a real “people person. She had a very successful way of dealing effectively with others, and her enthusiasm and energy was often contagious. When dealing with various projects and problems, she was an adaptable realist, using her common sense and trusting her experiences and impulses to uncover the correct answer. Else's talent for being a down to earth thinker, allowed many around her to see her as an excellent problem solver. Her primary occupation was Domestic Engineer and she also helped her husband start up a plumbing business. She was employed with Fairfield Mills, Henry's Laundry and Dry cleaning, and running a boarding house.
Else enjoyed her leisure time by fixing up the first, 3 story family home. When the family moved to the new home on Buttercup Avenue, her favorite pursuits became gardening, entertaining grandchildren and friends which including feeding and supervising them at the poolside.
She felt excited and challenged by sports. Even if she wasn’t the best, Else loved to go swimming in the beautiful Manitoban lakes and the Whiteshell. Recreational sports included Bocce, bingo and cards. Else was also something of a sports fan and enjoyed watching her favorite events whenever she got the opportunity. Tops on her list were wrestling, football and the Olypmics.
It is no surprise that she loved to travel and to visit new and different places. She was naturally curious about other parts of the world and loved the real life adventure that came from visiting them. She was willing to try anything once. Favorite vacations included trips to Hawaii, Mexico, Europe, Germany, Disney World, Grand Canyon, Las Vegas and the Caribbean.
Else was a lover of animals and cherished her pet Tessie, a miniature "spoiled" poodle. They were best friends for 11 years. After all, this pet got pieces of chocolate, spoonfuls of icecream and of course had to have real buttered toast.
Else believed that you had to experience life, and her life in retirement was no different. When that day finally arrived , she took it in stride as one more way to have fun. With her boundless energy and a desire to get the most out of life, she remained busy with people and projects. In retirement, she found new pleasure in playing cards, bingo and bocce and more cards. Even in retirement, Else continued to stay in touch with her old friends and made plenty of new ones at the Silverview Estates Retirement Complex as well.
Else passed away on March 8, 2010 at Health Science Centre, Winnipeg, Manitoba. She is survived by daughters Margaret, Heidi and son Charlie. Services were held at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home. She was laid to rest along side her husband at Waverley Memorial Gardens Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Else brought joy to all of those around her. She never had a mean bone in her body. She loved to have a good time. She loved to share her energy, wit, and her zest for all of her activities with her friends and family. Mrs. Else Marta Weppler lived life to its fullest and made everyone around her happier just for knowing her.
She will be remembered with a smile.
