She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 45 years Sidney, and brothers Frank Simpson, Ray Simpson and Stan Simpson.
She leaves to cherish and honour her memory daughter, Judy McIntyre and husband Jim, son Gary Chapman and wife Judy, grandson Steven McIntyre, granddaughter Cheryl Ingram and husband Andy, grandson Kevin Chapman and wife Sandy, seven great-grandchildren, sisters Bunny Widney and Shirley Keats, numerous nieces and nephews, and special long-time friend, Jeanne Wrigley.
Elsie was born in Glenora, Manitoba on February 7, 1924. She met Sid, a WWII Royal Air Force pilot trainer who was stationed in Canada. Following his military service in England they settled in Winnipeg where they lived until his retirement from the Winnipeg School Board. Elsie was a devoted wife and mother, very involved in the Fort Garry community, enjoying golf, curling, bridge, painting, crocheting and knitting.
She was an exceptional cook and her joy was welcoming friends and family into her home. She was very active in the Fort Garry Rotary Club where she served as Club Secretary for many years. She was honoured as a Paul Harris Fellow on her retirement from the Club.
Upon Sid’s retirement, they embarked upon a new life in beautiful Victoria where they built a home. Elsie resided there for 25 years. She was very close with friends and neighbours and loved her church family at Saanich Presbyterian Church where she served in many ministries, including being an Elder.
Elsie was very kind and loving toward all her family and has left a beautiful legacy of a life well-lived. She will be sadly missed. She believed the scripture John 11:25 when Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die”.
The family would like to express sincere thanks to the staff of 3 North at Grace Hospital for their compassionate care of Elsie during her stay.
Flowers are gratefully declined. If friends so desire, donations in Elsie’s name may be made to Grace Hospital Foundation, 300 Booth Drive, Winnipeg, MB R3J 3M7.
A private family memorial service will be held.
