Peacefully, on Monday, February 6th, Gaetano passed away at St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 88. We take solace in the knowledge that he is now with his Beloved Maria Rosa.
He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Michael (Maryanne), daughter Laura, and Sam (Susan), grandchildren, Cary (Krista) of Spruce Grove, Alberta, Raquel (Chris), Jonathan (Cindy), Sara and Noelle and great grandchildren Julia, Cameron, Dylan, Alyssa and Carter and brother Mike (Lina) Castagna and sister-in-law Magdalena Castagna, sister Vicenzia (Luigi) Conia and sister Illuminata of Milan. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Maria Rosa, brothers Nicola, Nazarano and Carmelo.
Gaetano was born in Calabria, Italy. As was the case with many Europeans after the war, Gaetano, Maria and Sam left Italy looking for a better life, first settling in Buenos Aries, Argentina in 1952. There Michael and Laura were born. The family then came to Canada in 1964. Gaetano worked for many years in the foundation construction industry. His passions were travelling and gardening. Gaetano and Maria traveled many years to Mexico and stayed from January to the end of March enjoying the warmth of the sun and the exciting culture.
Mass will be Celebrated on Saturday, February 11, at 10:30 a.m. Father Sam Argenziano the Celebrant. Viewing will begin at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Rosary Parish Church, 510 River Avenue. Entombment will follow in Holy Angel Mausoleum at Green Acres Memorial Gardens, No. 1 Hwy. East at Navin Road. Pallbeareres will be his nephews Savario Castagna, Tony Castagna, Sam Castagna and Aldo Castagna.
The family would like to thank the staff of Misericordia Pace 2nd floor that cared for Gaetano with patience, love and respect. The family would also like to acknowledge the EMS crew that attended him and staff at St. Boniface Hospital both in Emergency and on the E6 floor who cared for him and us during his brief stay.
