November 2, 1940 – August 27, 2017
Dawn was born in Brandon, Manitoba on November 2, 1940 as the oldest daughter of Cross and Eva Cheavins. She grew up on the family farm in Kemnay, Manitoba, was involved in various 4-H activities, participated in horse shows at local fairs and was active in other community events.
Her grandparents lived nearby. As a child, she enjoyed visits with her grandmothers. For the most part, throughout her life, Dawn was quiet and well-behaved. However, she had an adventurous soul. Her first taste of adventure came as a young lady, when she accompanied one of her grandmothers on trips to visit relatives living at a distance.
Her early school years were spent at the Kemnay School. She completed high school in Brandon, and went on to secretarial school.
Shortly after graduation, Dawn married Jim Leckie and moved to Virden, Manitoba. Jim started an accounting practice and Dawn’s secretarial skills were invaluable to the success of the business.
Before long, Penny was born and a couple of years later, their son, Kerry was born.
Dawn established many close friends through Kinettes and curling. In addition to being active in the community, she supported Jim, Penny and Kerry in their numerous activities. It was a busy household.
A family cottage at Kenosee Lake created happy memories, both in the summer and during the winter with the skidoo.
In 1973, the family moved to Winnipeg. Dawn returned to work full time as an administrative assistant, ensured hot meals were on the table every evening, kept an immaculate home where everyone felt welcome, and continued to support her family in their activities.
Winter was still spent at the curling rink, but summer was now spent travelling in a motorhome, creating more family memories.
When Jim and Dawn parted ways in 1979, she moved to Quesnel, BC with Murry Robinson. She married Murry in 1980. He was her partner and best friend for almost 40 years.
Dawn’s adventurous soul embraced life in Quesnel. She enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping on weekends while she continued her career during the week.
In 1987 Dawn and Murry returned to Winnipeg. Dawn’s career continued in a number of roles. She spoke fondly of the friendships she made at work and the interesting experiences she had.
As she had done throughout her life, Dawn still had hot meals waiting on the table, made Murry’s lunch every day, kept a beautiful home, a lovely patio and yard, and managed to fit in a cribbage game or two with Murry each morning before heading to the office.
Her best times were camping and fishing weekends with special friends, particularly at Sportsman’s Corner, the meat draws at the Legion or following her favourite sports team in person or on television.
As often as possible, Dawn would travel to Lloydminster to visit her grandchildren. She lived for these visits, and particularly enjoyed summer visits that were spent at the lake.
Although Dawn tried to go through life quietly, she left a huge mark on the hearts of many. She supported her two children in whatever they did, and with her quiet strength, made a significant difference in both of their lives.
She was a great listener and had a tremendous sense of humour. These traits made her a unique and special friend to many.
Most importantly, she was an awesome Grandma.
Dawn was predeceased by her parents, Cross and Eva Cheavins and her sister, Diane Cheavins.
She leaves to mourn her immediate family: husband Murry Robinson; daughter Penny Leckie; son Kerry Leckie (Janelle); grandchildren Kellsey, Aaron, Cooper and Asher Leckie. Dawn also leaves to mourn her extended family of Murry’s siblings, cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, as well as many close friends. We thought we had many more years and many more adventures to share. It is not possible to describe the hole that has been left in our lives and in our hearts.
At Dawn’s request, no funeral service will be held. Please remember Dawn by spending extra time with friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to your favourite charity.
