Gordon Grieef, beloved husband of Jessie (Jaye) Grieef passed away peacefully Wednesday, February 11, 2026 at the age of 85 years with family at his side.
Gord was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan and attended the University in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, where he earned his degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1963. He married Jessie Pauls in Prince Albert and then moved to Winnipeg in 1964 to take a job at Swifts. He loved mechanical engineering and joined SMS Engineering Ltd. in 1967 and worked there until he retired in 2002. He was responsible for many projects including those at St. Boniface Hospital, the airport and the Health Sciences Centre.
Outside of work, Gord’s passion was birding, and he travelled many to places to see birds. He was part of team that completed many Big Days and set and held the record for the most species seen in one day in Manitoba for many years. Gord’s life list was over 1600 species.
Gord was a gentle and quiet man who was proud of his family and of being a husband and father. He loved his family, weather, travelling, birding and engineering. He spent many hours travelling the world enjoying the birds along the way. He instilled a love of nature and travel in his children.
Gord is survived by his loving wife, Jaye Grieef, daughters Paula Grieef and Susan Grieef; son-in-law Derek Boutang; and grandson Noah Boutang; sister-in-law Lucille Grieef and nieces Tricia, Lisa and their families; in-laws Betty and Orest Chytyk, Syd Pauls, Harvey and Dawn Pauls and their families.
