Dear Gurdeesh , you were not only a dear coursemate  but a very dear and close friend. My parents loved you and always looked forward to your visit on Sundays when you were a Gentleman Cadet at the Indian Military Academy Dehradun. Gurdeesh was an extremely warm hearted human whose exubrience and laughter was contagious. As a dear friend and coursemate he will be missed terribly. His affection and attachment to his Thambis ( Madras Regiment) was unbelievable even in his retirement.  May his soul rest in peace.

I am deeply pained by the sad demise of my mentor and ex  Commander. A man witha heart of gold, his personality touched one and all he came across. Never to lose contact , we regularly spoke and met whenever passing by each other's location.  I had highest regards for him always and he also showered affection . My deepest condolences to Ma'am , Harleen and dear Harman. He was so proud of his children. Like Harleen said at the funeral He was the best father any body could have. He was also a great friend and a delightful person. I shall always miss him. 

We are deeply saddened to learn about the untimely demise of our dear friend Gurdeesh. He was a devoted friend, who will always be remembered as a great professional, who did the Indian Army and the nation proud!  As a value-driven personality, he was steadfast in maintaining and strengthening relationships not just with his friends but everyone he met. " Gurdeesh Ghumman had just been commissioned and joined the unit when I took over the command of 25 Madras in early 1972 in Sikkim. For well over four years we served together continuously and closely in high pressure environment. It's a long enough period to evolve a happy and meaningful personal relationship. He was very dear to me and my family. It was great pleasure to have him by my side. He was an asset.
Gurdeesh was an honest and upright officer, a keen learner and an accomplished trainer at the same time, a dynamic leader and a brave soldier who always broke new path to reach his goal. 
He was one of the few who got command of the unit that he was  commissioned into. It's a great honour. He weilded his command with great elan and professionalism. He led his men from the front and was able to motivate them to achieve the impossible. He was receipient of Sena Medal, a symbol of his bravery and sacrifice.
Gurdeesh was a true Thambi who loved his men and was loved by them in equal measure, if not more. He was the only officer of the Regiment who travelled from Farmland in Punjab to the villages of South India just to meet his men in retirement and their families. He was received everywhere with great warmth, love and respect. 
Our association grew stronger as the time passed. Gurdeesh would always call on us wherever we were and share some very happy moments with my family. He attended my daughters marriage and subsequently developed an independent equation with them and their children. My grand children remember him with great love and reverence. Harman is a witness to it.
I pray that he be happy in his heavenly abode and continue to bless those who loved him. God bless."

This news comes as such a shock. Our deepest condolences. Bhaji was so personable. He always went out of his way to make new friends and to reach out to each and every individual in the group to make them feel at ease. Time flew by in his company. We still remember our first meeting when you inquired whether there was any other Ghuman in Gurdwara. What a coincidence how we turn out to be Ghuman from Batala back in India! You made sure to visit our parents and meet other ex servicemen, listening their stories. You had big ideas for the welfare of the ex servicemen around the neighbouring villages. You were always full of energy and laughter. You did a great service to India as a soldier and kept that flame as a civilian. We will miss your infectious smile.

It is difficult to put into words what I owe to Gurdeesh Uncle. His originality has been a constant source of suggestions to me ever since I first met him and his death, is one of the worst blows I have ever felt.

He was there giving me suggestions on my first job interview in Canada, and I got selected in that job. I always remember his suggestions when going to a business meeting. He was always very proud of me, I will miss him all through my life. I strongly believe his soul is blessing me from the highest heaven and telling me  the same thing he used to say: "Take it slow Anukul and live your life to the fullest!"




“What an amazing person and what a remarkable life. I feel so lucky that I got to know him.” We meet in restaurants at Brandon. He was very friendly person and guide me to get settled in canada as at that time I was on work permit.

The demise of Col Ghuman, a thoroughbred soldier and a gentleman will leave a void in all lives he touched with his warmth and affection. His love for Thambis and Deccan Devils can never be forgotten.
I joined him as his Coy Officer in Sri Lanka and subsequently worked closely with him as his Coy Cdr and Adjutant in J&K.
I vividly remember my conversations with him during the operation where we got KC and 5 other gallantry awards, the operation prolonged to more than 48h but he never let any pressure come on us. He had faith and trust in Thambis so much that he knew the boys would deliver. He always remained  in touch and would never miss an opportunity to call or meet.
Sir, the countless memories and moments we shared will always be cherished. You will continue to inspire all in the Deccan Devils.

Unlike most other coursemates I did not have the pleasure of knowing Gurdeesh while in service. My wife and I met Gurdeesh and Harjit for the first time on the CGT cruise in Dec 2017.
In that one brief meeting Gurdeesh and Harjit went out of their way to be friendly snd helpful. They gave us sound advise since our daughter was moving to Canada. 
Most pertinent were Dear Gurdeesh's words, which showed the  largehearted loving and excellent human being that he has always been - "DK tell Ayesha that she is not to worry at all. She is leaving one father in India, but she has another father in Canada. Our home is also hers." 
Our one meeting endeared Gurdeesh to us so much that we kept up and it seemed as if we had known each other for a lifetime. We miss you Gurdeesh. You must even have brightened heaven with your presance.

It is truly sad and extremely shocking to hear about the sudden demise of Deesh. He was a devoted family man and a very dear friend. His loss is totally irreparable. We all know death is for the rich and the poor, the strong and the weak, without any differentiation but when it happens to someone you love and respect, it leaves a huge emptiness. This void, in our lives, being left by my 1st Coy Cdr, in 25 MADRAS, is not going to be filled easily. Gurdeesh and Harjeet combined were one of the best couples we have known, in the Army. They complemented each other completely. Having close association with Hermann "German" Singh and Harleen, we definitely imagine and feel deeply for the family's pain. In such a poignant moment we can only pray that God gives Harjeet and the family strength to overcome the grief. May the Almighty give them fortitude to endure the pain and bereavement. Gurdeesh, a dear dear friend - we go back many many years, over 50. We were together in NDA and the closest of friends. He was a kind, generous and gentle person who always came forward to help. He became favourite of my parents while he was training at IMA and would visit them in Dehradun regularly. Although we didn’t meet so much in later  years, we were very much in touch. Even though our lives moved in different directions that didn’t make us any less close. Gurdeesh, you will be missed dearly and I’m so glad I got to speak to you just a few days before you left us. As always you were in the best of spirits and nothing could ever bring down your spirits.

There are innumerable stories and instances with Gurdeesh that were fondly narrated times over by Inder from the time he was commanding the 25 Madras in Lanka. And many more from times before that we will cherish for our lives.

My friend colonel Ghuman was one of the rarest gem whom I had the fortune to have met,have known and be his long life friend and admirer. I met Col Ghuman in Kapurthala when he brought his Bn as part of the Brigade where I was the BM. I remember him  so fondly as being one of the most gentle and humble Officer. He always had a pleasant word with everyone he met and was a very helpful person. Socially our families met and got along well. He was a very good Officer and a thorough Gentleman. We spoke about a year back and promised to meet in my next travel to Canada. May his noble soul rest in peace 🙏🏻🙏🏻.

I received a message today about Mr. Ghuman's demise with great shock and sadness. I knew him and his wife during my time in Winnipeg, searching for a place to rent in 2019. The loving care shown to me was as if he has known me for a long time.

His willingness to rent his property to me and made sure that I was comfortable will remain in my memory. At times, he came to the basement to keep me company and chat with me. He asked if I was okay or need anything whenever he saw me. He always proudly introduced me to his visitors. He was very unique.

Coming to Winnipeg from Ontario for training was not easy, but the Ghuman family made my stay there to be peaceful and very comfortable. I regret that I did not see him before he travelled to Indian late in 2019. Unfortunately, I did not see him when I left for Ontario in July of 2020.

However, he called to check on me in Ontario when he came back to Winnipeg last year. This confirms that he was such a caring human being interested in the well-being of people around him. Just a few days ago I was planning to visit Winnipeg later this summer, and I was sure of coming to his house to say hello and spend some time with him. It is unfortunately sad that I won't be able to see him again.

I would like to thank him for his care and love. I so much appreciate it. My condolences to his wife, children,  family members, and friends. May the good Lord grant him peaceful rest in his bosom. I wish the entire Ghuman family peace, good health, and long life. Goodbye Mr. Ghuman.

Col.Ghuman sir, he is highly missed by our Kennedy family (Coimbatore, Tamilnadu, India), he  was also a pillar of our family after kennedy uncle demise.

I have known and worked under him since 1988 my first posting @ IPKF  Srilanka.

I considered him as my father . He treated me as his son. 

I came to Batala many a times, Harman & Harleen were with us in our mess  eating Sambaar along with us, while the Unit was in Hyderabad .

I met Madam and Papaji  for the first time in Ludhiana. I was overwhelmed with her hospitality.  I’ve always  considered as a member of your family. 

Sir and Madam also visited our house @ Hyderabad and blessed us. Though Sir was regular @ our home whenever he was in Hyderabad. 

Will miss Ghuman Sir. But he will be our hearts always.  My wife joins me in sending our heartfelt condolences to all the members of your family.

I met Gurdeesh uncle 6 years ago. He came to my office on business with Harjeet aunty and left making me his daughter. After that initial meeting he would often come by my office with aunty to say hello or warm everyone up with his jolly smile. 

Gurdeesh uncle was incredibly special. He remembered to call and check in, even when life got busy. He called me from India to congratulate me on my wedding last year. In 2019 he happily showed me home videos of his last trip to India. My favorite was the one where he went swimming in a well - happy as a child, both living that experience and rewatching it a year later. 

Gurdeesh uncle, your warmth, incredibly welcoming smile, and sweet demeanor will be greatly missed. Deepest condolences to aunty and the rest of the family.

Gurdeesh was one in a million - humble, kind, and deeply respected. He always kept in touch with me, no matter if he was in Winnipeg or India. He remembered all the little things and celebrated life’s precious moments. He remembered that my daughter was getting married in May 2020 and called both her and I to congratulate us from India. 

I’ve known Gurdeesh for over 20 years, always wearing a smile on his face, always happy to see friends and family. I will never forget his love and kindness.

Gurdeesh is my NDA course mate and dear friend.
Gurdeesh seems to have left in his signature style - appearing all of a sudden and disappearing, leaving us with memories we cherish. He was a man with a heart so big that was reflected in his laughter and unforgettable cocky smile .
His regular visits to meets the veterans of his unit reflected his compassion and love for the men that served with him in uniform. His descriptions of his visits revealed that connecting with people gave him the greatest of pleasures.
 In Many ways there was the spark of the child in him that conveyed love and friendship and which we all treasured.

I am at a loss for words to condole your loss. Your father was a great human being. Wise in the mind and soft in the heart. I am equally aware, He  was fully capable of keeping those near him on the edge of patience. But he was a true Deccan Devil....the Bn flowed in his veins through the day and night. His love and affection for those who ever touched his life and whose lives he ever touched, was unbound. Always looking to make things better, He was restless for action...always. He even made you people speak to me a few times....I could understand...much to your discomfort... *"Arre...apni unit ka tiger hai...baat karo sab"*. All smiles himself...He puts a smile on my face (not without the pain in the heart!!) every time the memories cross!

May God grant the family the strength that is needed to tide over these days. May solace and peace be with you all.

I am very saddened to hear of this news. Colonel Saab always had a presence about him at the India Pavilion during Folklorama. In addition to always providing us with a helping hand, more importantly he always had for us very wise counsel. He was a good soul and he will be missed. To the family, our prayers and thoughts. A rare gentleman, warm and gracious person. A noble soul and a unique personality. We always admired his personality which was full of gratitude, humbleness. It is a great loss for everyone whosever had met him even for once. Our deepest condolences to Ghuman family, his wife, son & daughter. 

Gurdeesh and my association started in July 1968 when both of us joined National Defence Academy (NDA). We were in the same class & same group of friends. It carried on into the Indian Military Academy (IMA) when I joined the same company as him. 
We joined the same battalion- 25 MADRAS. As we were young bachelors we did all the things as young men do & more. He wa the serious one though. 
Our journey took us to various places including war zone in Sri Lanka, where one could see the ferocity of a tiger in him dealing with the enemy & the humility of a saint in dealing with the locals. 
Over the period of our lives we also came to know each other’s families. My sisters children were very sad to hear about their Gurdeesh Mama’s demise. 
I pray to god to give peace to his noble soul & strength to Harjeet, children & grand children, the other members of his family including me and his other well wishers to bear this loss. 

Having known Col Gurdeesh Ghuman Sir as my first Commanding Officer when I started up serving Indian Army in 25 Madras Regiment in the year 1995 in Kapurthala , Punjab.

He was really a kind hearted person who takes utmost care of soldiers who are part of 25 Madras Regiment and was really a guide and inspiration to me.He was very much attached with 25 Madras Regiment and always enquire about those who served in 25 Madras Regiment and their whereabouts.

The best memory I could able to recollect about Ghuman Sir is having the opportunity to meet him along with my Madras Regiment friends in Tirupathi , Andhra Pradesh in March ,2019. We had spent a nice time together and visited multiple places in Tirupathi including Tirumala.

The words told by him when we met for the last time still echo in my ears "Zindha rahane se dhubara family ke saath aayenge" but unfortunately we lost him badly without getting another chance to meet him again.

He was such a down to earth person who used to make video calls frequently to connect with us and inquire about our well- being and also takes interest to speak with my family members especially with my kids. I am really feeling guilty that I could not talk to Sir in the recent months though I keep thinking about calling him but was really shocked to know about his sudden demise.

May your noble soul Rest in Peace Sir and Our heartfelt condolences to all your near & dear ones !

Gurdeesh is fondly remembered by his course-mates and those in A Squadron, where we did so much together; cross-country, WT and so much more flash by as we flip through old pics and then we passed out of the Academy together.  
He spared no effort to remain connected even from Canada, with his unit, his friends, with us. It was always a pleasure meeting him, warm, humble and caring.

The first time I met Col Ghuman was at Nasirabad in 1981 where as a youngster I went to receive him as he rejoined 25 MADRAS after a tenure outside the Battalion. The last time I met him was at Hyderabad in 2020 when he came to attend a function with Mrs. Ghuman. Just the previous year I met at our Unit on the eve of his second tour of South India to meet exservicemen from our unit. During that time he told me that he wanted to take a ride on the Hyderabad Metro and I willingly obliged and had also took the opportunity to take him to my home as it was opposite the metro station. A gentleman to the core, a warm hearted person, always smiling, he ensured that you have a special place for him in your heart. He always maintained contact whether he was at Batala or Canada. On a personal note - Col Ghuman attended my daughter's wedding at Hyderabad in Nov '19. I can never forget the effort he made to be present for the function.  Me and my family will always remember him. May Col Ghuman's Soul Rest in Peace! May God give strength to his family to bear the loss! We will miss you Sir!

Col Ghuman ,fondly called Deesh Paaji ,was my first 2 IC at POOH (Sugar Sector),
only for Ragging purposes , the day I joined the DECCAN DEVILS . His huge self wrapped up in Coat Parka sitting at the 2IC table never revealed his being a Capt till 
I saw him peeping through the window when I was being medically examined in my birthday suit, under his own orders.
This big  Khalsa had an  EVEN BIGGER HEART ,which everyone loved . From cooking  Parathas in Lakuma Bunker to TEACHING me the nuances of being a good hearted officer , he always  was a beacon . 
We shared an Adventurous motorcycle trip to his school in Chittorgarh , during this trip his ability to strike a bond with any stranger was revealed to me  which I continued to see  whenever we went for any task when he was the Commanding Officer in Kapurthala. His contribution to the unit in getting THE UNIT CITATION and Shaurya Chakra will always be remembered .
The bond he established with every individual in the unit was carried through by him even after he settled in Canada post retirement . NO OFFICER of the Entire Madras Regiment has ever visited so many THAMBIS in their hometown after retirement .
We have lost him physically but in our heart he will always be with us in all FONDNESS


I know Col Gurdeesh Ghuman  Sir through my husband. They both worked together in 25 Madras. He was a mentor and a guide not only to my husband but to me too both while in Service  and later on..  
He was so pure at heart, a loving person and was a fatherly figure to us.  Whenever he  had visited Hyderabad he would make sure we all meet. Blessed to have the opportunity to spend some time together. He also visited us at home with Mrs Ghuman  during one of his visits. We were in touch with him from Winnipeg too. He would have video calls too to connect closely.

He had child like innocence and was eager   to do so many things to keep all his men from 25 Madras together.  He use to travel extensively by road in South India .  He was never tired but in fact was enthusiastic to visit all his pals . 

It was a sudden shock to us to hear about  his demise. 
It’s great loss not only to his family but to all of is who are his extended family. You will remain in our hearts forever Sir. Keep showering your Blessings on  us. Om Shanti 🙏

I met Uncle Ghuman a couple of years ago when he traveled to my city to see his mates from his battalion in Belgaum. I knew him as my friend Harleen's Dad. (Harleen and I are medical school classmates). 

Uncle Ghuman had a deep impact on me through his kindness and love for all he knew. I met him only once but we kept in touch regularly on phone. He always enquired after his battalion mates who were under my medical care in the Armed Forces Veterans Clinic that I work in. Every one of his battalion mates used to speak of his loving, caring, friendly nature. They looked up to him and loved him dearly. He spent most of his time in India visiting their families. 

Uncle will be missed so much by all of us.

My Sincere Condolences to Gurdeesh's family and friends. I worked a number of years with Gurdeesh at Red River College and found him to be a compassionate & caring individual. He never failed to ask me how my daughters were doing and then later my grandchildren even remembering them by name and asking to see pictures which I was only to happy to share with him. We spent a few hours sharing stories of our pasts. His interest in other people was genuine.  Rest in Peace     

I have known Gurdeesh since 1968. He was a very noble and caring person. We travelled together in a train for joining National Defence Academy in Pune, India. During one of exercise called Josh, we were to run 10 odd kilometers with all our military outfit including a heavy rifle. I developed a serious pain on side of my stomach while running. Gurdeesh with all his kindness, offered to take my rifle and run. So for many kilometers he ran with two rifles to support me. He will be greatly missed. 

Veerji having you in our life was a blessing. You gave my daughter a home, and accepted her into your family seamlessly. You became a second father to her and I am so grateful for the love you have showered her with. Whenever I met you I was instantly filled with joy because of the strength you embodied. I could never have imagined that meeting you on 11th March would have been the last time I would get to meet you.
Your spirit has been seen in your love for Alekh and Anant. The bond you shared with Alekh and true child like joy cherished by you has be awe-inspiring.
	You would alway be present to see me off at the airport. You always made it a point to say good bye. My husband and I could see you waving us till the last turn. My only regret is that I could not be there to bid you fare-thee-well. 
	My husband found a brother in you and so did I. Your values and conduct has set an example for us. We are so truly blessed to have spent the last 11 years as your family. We only wish for you to be happy where ever you are. 

You would be dearly missed

We initially became family due to Herman and  Nimrat’s (Neeti) marriage. But your family and ours was connected with more than just marriage, it was connected through the institution of army. “Ones a soldier, always a soldier”, and this saying could not be more true for you. You embodied every great thing this institution stands for. A great soldier, true leader, and your valour and dedication could be seen in your eyes.
	Virji, you had a great caliber to connect with everyone and inculcate them into your family. You always made me and Simran feel the compassion you embodied. If I am able to incorporate even one percent of your personality, I would consider myself blessed. 
	You had one of the kindest souls I have ever seen. You were kind enough to pay us a visit for my father’s Bhog. We were so grateful for your presence that day.
	You can be seen as a pillar of strength during tough times and a guiding light always. 
	It has been a true honour to have known you and learn form you. 
Indian army lost a soldier, but heaven won an angel.

Dear uncle, it has been an absolute honour to call you family. You are technically my massar, but I have always called you uncle and you never minded it. I guess we were both a little too used to army induced habits. I think the most profound thing we shared was our love for army. I still remember the excitement and happiness that spilled out your eyes when you found out about my interest in SSB. You found contacts for me and went out of your way so I could get all the information I needed. You just wanted to help me any way you could. We never talked much about it, but we both knew our love for army bonded us. You were one of the few people who never questioned or second guessed my inclination towards army, because you, just like my mom, knew that army feels like home. 
	Words can’t describe how grateful I am to have known you. 
When you came for Nanu’s bhog, everyone thought for a second that it was my daddu that had showed up, but it was you and I wish I could have explained how much that meant to us, especially me. You were there when it counts and that is the sign of an honourable man, which you were. 
	You were a soldier till your last breath, you had the heart of a soldier. You were sweet, kind and gentle and I will miss you so much.

Colonel Gurdeesh Ghumman will always be remembered as a kind, considerate and loving person we knew for past 18 years. Always 
 ready and reaching out for doing  good for the organization and wishing well for  his subordinates, he was a great personality to be associated with.

It was a gift to have Gurdish Bhaji as a close relative. A Noble man the sun has set on an amazing life. How much we miss you and wish that you were here. Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure. Your kids love you beyond words and missed you beyond measure.

Ghumman Sir had left a very high bar as my predecessor in the battalion. He was fondly remembered by all and I used to wonder why till I met him. I remember him as a wonderful human being truly committed to the welfare of the thambis, even after his retirement. I used to look forward to our interactions and came away gratified  from each one. I salute you sir.

Came in contact with Gurdeesh in National Defence Academy where we joined the same Course. He and me were together in A Sqn alongwith other cadets. Thereafter, it was a lifelong association with him.  Gurdeesh endeared himself to one and all who came in contact with him. He was  exceptionally humane and kind. He will be missed for ever by all of us.

Brother Harman I am really sorry  for  your loss on untimely  demise  of uncle . I met him so many times in my layovers  at Red River College  terminal aND also in our  annual get together party. Such a  gentleman.  He will always be  missed and we all should be proud of him being a  brave  soldier  of our native country. Gurdeesh and me served Indian Army together for over 2 decades. He was a spirited Infantry officer known for his knowledge, competence, cheerful disposition, humane approach, resourcefulness, eye for details, sincerity and result oriented approach.
He was always an inspiring company and a source of cheerfulness & positive vibes. 
A devoted Sikh and a  thorough gentleman who was always ready to help others. His contribution to the community will always be respectfully remembered.
May his departed soul rest in peace. May the bereaved family  be granted due strength to bear this irreparable loss of his demise.

I met Mr Ghuman two years ago through a friend of mine. It was amazing to hear his experiences and achievements of his life.

I was privileged to have been a friend to Gurdeesh.  He was unfailingly generous and always friendly, always interested in hearing someone else's story.  He was greatly respected by students and staff at the college and had the gift of listening which is so rare these days.  Gurdeesh was fond of reading everything from the classics to technical journals and it was often my great pleasure to discuss literature with him over a shared thermos of coffee.  He was an able spokesman for his religion and was delighted to have the opportunity to explain Sikhism to someone who had been totally in the dark regarding the commendable tenets of that faith.

Gurdeesh was so proud of his family and his vast circle of friends; I never heard him utter a disparaging word against anyone.  The world will be a darker place without him.

I have fond memories of Gurdeesh escorting me to the cash office from the bookstore of Red River College. He was always interested in where I had travelled in Manitoba and other places. He was very proud of his family and like speaking about India. Sorry for your loss.

Albert and I are so sorry for your loss. Three-day was a great man and I enjoyed working with him . May he rest in peace. Praying for you all during this difficult time.
