He will be deeply missed by his four children, Barbara Christie, David and Barb Christie, Cathy and Ken Beavis and Michael and Valerie Christie. He will also be missed by his much loved grandchildren who will miss his quiet, humble approach to life: Eric (Lisa), Sarah (Tyler), Meghan (Dave), Patrick (Elyse), Morgan, Samuel, Alexander and Emma. Harold will also be lovingly remembered by his nine great grandchildren: Seth, Kaleigh, Brielle, Myla, Payton, Carter, Noah, Brynn, and Harper. Harold was predeceased by his loving wife Evelyn in 2018, his brother Keith and his loving grandson Alex.
Harold enjoyed a remarkable and happy life of 92 years, raising their family at their home of 56 years at 25 Triton Bay and at the family cottage at Granite Lake, Ontario.
Harold had a very successful two discipline career. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science (Mathematics) degree in 1952, Dad and Mom moved to Kitchener, Ontario, where Dad started his working career as an actuary with Dominion Life. Six years, and three babies later, he made the courageous choice to change careers and became an educator. A profession that led him to many successes. He started out as a high school mathematics teacher at Windsor Park Collegiate, and then head of the Mathematics Department at Dakota Collegiate. It did not take long for the School Division to recognize his leadership qualities, promoting him to school principal of three schools within St. Vital. His last posting was principal of Windsor School, where his three great grandchildren, Kaleigh, Myla, and Carter now attend!
At an early age, Harold excelled in music, in particular, piano and organ music. That led him to his other full time career, of 60 years, as a music director of many Anglican churches. One of his first, was at St. Aiden's Anglican Church where he met and married his lifelong partner Evelyn Elizabeth Glover. He also for many years was the Choir Director at St. John's Cathedral with his final stop at St. Luke's Anglican Church. The entire family was dedicated to the church through the commitment exhibited by our parents. Attending the annual Christmas Choral service was one of our yearly highlights. One of his proudest moments was Dad receiving an Honorary Doctorate of Canon Law from Emmanuel College at the University of Saskatchewan in 2004. Dr. Harold Christie was a very proud man that day.
Beyond his most successful career, Harold's most precious times were spent at the family cottage. Not only did he cherish his time with his immediate family but also with many cottage neighbours who became lifelong friends. Those friends also travelled with Mom and Dad to overseas destinations before and after retirement. Harold bought the cottage property in 1960, and throughout the years ended up with a main cabin, and two bunk cabins to accommodate his growing family. They were constructed by Harold and his crew. As many know, the highlight at the cottage was the weekly Saturday evening sing along’s led by Dad, along with the Hansell Clan, playing on his beloved pump organ. Renditions of "Rule Britannia" and "Maple Leaf Forever" will never be the same!
Harold also loved the special holiday seasons, especially Christmas, where he took charge of decorating the house. Of course, he had to have a feast, along with pork pie, Christmas pudding, and all the other traditional items you would serve at Christmas. Mom has to be given credit for delivering on his high expectations!
Dad, your calm, quiet demeanor will be missed by many but know that you are now with Mom looking out for all of us.
The extended family would like to express their gratitude for the care Dad received from the entire medical team at the interim care unit at Misercordia Hospital over the last six weeks, as well as the friends and staff at Dakota House.
A celebration of Dad's life will be held on Monday December 23rd, 2019 at 1:30 pm at St. Luke's Anglican Church, 130 Nassau St N.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Luke's Anglican Church.
