Peacefully with his family at his side, Harry Lamontagne passed away on December 9th four days shy of his 91st Birthday
Harry was born in Winnipeg December 13th 1929 to Alexander and Grace Lamontagne (nee Robertson), the oldest of three.
He trained as a construction electrician and loved to point out the various buildings around Winnipeg that he had wired in the 50’s. Work took him to the far north with the construction of the DEW line and building the dam at Kitimat, but it was his epic road trip in a 1956 Ford Fairlane Victoria from Calgary to Acapulco with his buddy Goldie that filled him with memories to last a lifetime.
He agreed to go on a blind date where he met Marilyn Kendall, a young x-ray tech from Sioux Lookout. She was the love of his life. A new mine was opening in northern Manitoba so he packed up his new wife and baby and moved to Thompson. The early sixties were tough times in a new town; entertainment was what you made yourself. They enjoyed those early years raising three boys together.
Once the boys were on their own and Harry retired, they moved out to Paint Lake Provincial Park. Together they built the cabin, designing and expanding as they settled into life at the lake. Life was good fishing off the dock in the morning sun or watching Marilyn use her chainsaw on anything blocking her view of the lake. When the lake was frozen they made their way to Phoenix Arizona for a few months to soak up the sun.
In 2016 it was time to move back to southeastern Manitoba, age had crept up on them and they needed more care than the north provided. They moved to Bridgepark manor a new assisted living facility in Steinbach where they enjoyed a couple of years of living the easy life. With their health failing and dementia creeping in, they made their final move together to Resthaven Nursing Home in 2018. We are grateful they were able to end their life together in such a wonderful place. Sadly Covid 19 took its toll on Harry and he was unable to recover.
He leaves to mourn his wife of 61 years Marilyn, his three sons Geoff (Sandy) of Steinbach, Patrick (Shelley) of Winnipeg and Terry (Sherry) of Thompson as well as his grandchildren Jason, Aaron, Brittany, Brian and Isaiah and many nieces and nephews. Harry was pre-deceased by his parents, his brother Lorne and his sister Joyce.
A special thank you to the staff at Resthaven for making their life there so rich, everyone from the housekeeping and dietary staff, clerical, recreation, nurses and health care aides played a part in making their days enjoyable. They say it takes a community and this could not be more true than during this pandemic. Thank you.
Cremation has taken place. The final inurnment will take place at a later time when it is safe to do so.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the expansion of Resthaven through the HavenGroup Foundation 2006 Inc. 177 Woodhaven Avenue Steinbach MB R5G 1K7
