Mother to Samantha Buchwald (Mark), Jason and Devin, the mother of her precious granddaughter Serenity. Helen is also Grandma Helen to Paris, Aelysia, Tamzyn, Kieran and Sarah. She was Auntie Helen to many.
Helen grew up in a number of towns and cities in Scotland, but Aberdeen was always home to her. After being away for a number of years due to her father being transferred with his job, her family moved back to Aberdeen in 1960 and she finished her schooling at Albyn School for Girls where she met her dear friends Patricia Mutch (Milne), Addie Allison (Davidson – deceased), and reconnected with Dorothy Cameron, with whom she had attended elementary school with previously.
After finishing high school, Helen went on to complete a two-year business degree at Aberdeen College of Commerce. After working for a couple of years, she decided to immigrate to Canada and arrived in Winnipeg on October 15, 1968, a move she never regretted.
She was employed in a number of different industries, including working for the Greater Winnipeg Gas Company, now known as Manitoba Hydro, chartered accountants, CP’s hotel The Northstar Inn, also working in retail for a number of years, before returning to administrative work at the University of Manitoba from 1988 until retiring in December 2006.
Helen retired with the intention of continuing to work on a part-time basis, as having time on her hands was something alien to her. After a short time back in retail, she became the Administrative Assistant at her home church, Waverley Church, a job that was close to her heart. She loved interacting with the other staff, the congregation and especially all the children who attended church and came to the Kids Spot program every week. She kept a steady supply of M&M’s and jellybeans on her desk with the hope that one of them would come in for a hug, and it worked!
A Memorial Service for Helen will be held on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at 2:00 pm at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard.
