After a long illness, Mom died peacefully on November 27, 2022 at Middlechurch Nursing Home. She was 90 years old. She is survived by daughter Deborah and granddaughter Elizabeth (Al) of Winnipeg; son Glen (Kim) and grandsons Sam and Michael of Halifax, NS; sister Betty of Oakville, ON; nieces Judy and Linda and nephews Rob and David. She was predeceased by husband Dave in 1995.
Mom was born in Melville, SK and grew up in Glenavon, SK. At the age of 16, she came to Winnipeg by herself, to find work. She remained a proud Winnipegger for the rest of her life. She worked for the Bank of Nova Scotia, Bank of Montreal and then for many years in the Comptrollers office at the University of Manitoba. She loved meeting people, and she made many lifelong friends at work. She was generous, kind and friendly to everyone she met.
Mom was devoted to the care of her family, and we were her pride and joy. There was nothing that she wouldn’t do for us. Mom was constantly busy at home, and was the center of our family life. She was always supportive and encouraging. When we were growing up, she stressed the importance of education and always encouraged us to do well academically.
She was very proud of her Welsh heritage, and she passed on to us her love of music and all things Welsh. She stayed in touch with our relatives in Wales her entire life, and a highlight for her was a trip to Wales in 1977. Growing up in rural Saskatchewan during the depression, she was familiar with overcoming hardship, and we were raised on many incredible stories of how she and her family managed to get by during those years. Along with raising a family, she cared for her mother for many years after Granny came to live with us, and for Dave after he became ill.
Many thanks to the staff of the Middlechurch home, and Dr. David Haligowski for their wonderful care of mom during her last few months. Special thanks to Drs.Orest Prodan and James Johnston for their medical care of mom over many years.
