It is with profound sadness that we announce that Huguette passed away peacefully, at the age of 92, in the loving hands of her family, in the early morning hours of February 5, 2025 at St. Boniface Hospital after, thankfully, a very brief illness.
Mom leaves to mourn her 3 children, Lynne (son Marcus, Giulia), John (Megan, daughter Genevieve) and Mary Anne (David, daughters Emma, Katie); her siblings Jeannine (Ron), Roger (Sandra), Rachelle (Yvan) and Bob (Helene); her sister-in-law Helen (John); a large extended family; as well as extremely close friends Mark, Sandy and Kayla, Ursula, Gayle and Werner, Jeannie and Ray, and Darlene.
Huguette was predeceased by her husband Jack (1971), her husband Victor (2017), her amazing son-in-law Larry (2021) and her beloved brothers Roland, Bernie and Richard, as well as her parents, George and Rose.
Huguette was born and raised in Sudbury, Ontario, the eldest of 8 surviving children. She had a happy childhood with her beloved brothers and sisters. Mom met and fell in love with our handsome dad Jack at his family farm in Southern Ontario where they both worked. They married and moved to Winnipeg for work. Tragically, our father lost his life at a very early age, leaving Huguette with 3 young children and a full-time teaching job. Florence and Bert Bird, our amazing neighbours, helped our family through this time, for which we are forever grateful.
Huguette valued education above many things. She was an award-winning student and a dedicated teacher and counsellor, with a bilingual teaching certificate from Ottawa, a B.A., B.Ed., M.Ed. in French, Psychology, Curriculum and Administration from Winnipeg universities. She was an amazing, hard-working teacher, colleague and leader in the River East-Transcona School Division. Her tireless committee work changed the teaching profession for the better in Manitoba.
Mom met and married her second husband Victor in 1974, and together they raised us 3 kids into adulthood. Huguette and Victor enjoyed quality time with their loving family and dear friends with a Carpe Diem attitude. Huguette’s passions were cooking, baking, reading, theater, arts, films, gardening, get-togethers, traveling and visiting family in Ontario and Vancouver. Later in life, Mitsi, her sweet cat, took great care of Mom’s heart too. Huguette was a tremendously giving and devoted mom, grandmother and friend.
Mom’s greatest joy came from her 3 children, their spouses, and especially her 4 grandchildren Marc, Genevieve, Emma and Katie. She supported and celebrated their accomplishments in sports, dance, theatre and music and loved her grandkids fiercely . Mom/Memere will live on in our hearts as our greatest cheerleader. She lived for us and our happiness. She was an inspiration and a wonderful role-model, a true gem. Mom/Memere, you are irreplaceable.
A celebration of Huguette’s life will take place at Thomson “In the Park”, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. on Friday, February 21, 2025 at 2:00pm where she will remain to rest. Many thanks to Dr. Quy Doan, St. Boniface Clinic, and the staff at St. Boniface Hospital for their amazing care.
“Thou art as wise as thou art beautiful.” William Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Huguette touched so many lives with her kindness, strength and grace.
Rest peacefully Mom. We will be together again. We love you forever and always, more than words can say.
