It is with immeasurable sadness, that we announce the peaceful passing of Ioan Matei Ciric on December 2nd at St Boniface Hospital, in his 85th year. Beloved husband to Mariana Ciric for over 55 years. Loving father to Ioana and Romulus and granddaughters Daniela, Ana and Elena: grandsons Alessandro and Rowan. He is predeceased by his sister Victoria. He will be missed by many extended family, as well as by the large number of colleagues and students he mentored over the years.
Ioan was born in Caransebes, Romania. After completing his studies (Dr.-Ing./Ph.D.) at the Polytechnic University of Bucharest, he pursued further knowledge as a research fellow at the University of Manchester. He and his family moved to Kinshasa, Zaire, where he taught at the University for 4 years, and then Athens, Greece before settling permanently in Winnipeg in 1980. He accepted a position at the University of Manitoba in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and he remained devoted to the University until even after his retirement as Professor Emeritus in 2017, continuing to publish papers and mentor colleagues. He was internationally known for his original research in applied electromagnetics, electromagnetic theory, applied numerical analysis and mathematical physics. He is still the most cited Canadian scientist in the area of multiple scattering of electromagnetic waves, which proved to be of special interest to NASA. With over 115 published journal papers, he was a Life Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and a Fellow of the MIT Electromagnetics Society.
In his free time, Ioan was an avid piano player and loved classical music, finding the time to pursue his passion almost daily. He also loved travelling, and took his family on many adventures all over the world. In his youth, he was an accomplished mountain climber and table tennis player.
Funeral services will be held on December 12th, 2022 at 10 am, at Thompson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd, Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, if so inclined, please make a donation in Ioan’s name to Cancer Care Manitoba.
