Mrs. Janet A.D Johnstone Boatman

We are very sad to announce the passing of our wonderful wife, mom, and Grandma, Janet Boatman, at the Grace Hospital ICU on July 29, 2011 with family and friends at her side.

Janet was predeceased by her parents, Jack and Janet Johnstone, her sister in law Anne, brother in law Colin , and nephew Andrew . Janet was born on April 19, 1938 in Springside, Scotland. Janet leaves behind her loving husband of 49 years David, daughter Connie and her husband Greg Torossi, and daughter Jacquie Boatman. She also leaves behind the lights of her life, her three beautiful grandchildren, Shanleigh, Arianna, and Amelia. She also leaves behind her brothers Jack , Peter (Flo), sisters Jessie, Jean, sisters in law Margaret (Peter), Agnes (Marie), brother in law John (Jackie) as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Janet came to Canada in 1961 where she was employed as a Nanny. She then met David, the love of her life, a dashing military man who swept her off her feet. They married in 1962 and following the birth’s of their two daughters in Oromocto, they soon found themselves posted to Germany. Their return to Canada in 1969 took them to Shilo where they resided until 1988. Their final move took them to Winnipeg. During this time Janet held various jobs beginning with a homemaker, then the Carnation plant in Carberry, the Expressmart and Groceteria in Shilo and lastly the Agricultural Research Station at the University of Manitoba. Most important to her was her role as a mom.

The military was a tough life for the wives who spent countless hours alone when their men were on manoeuvres or peacekeeping. These ladies never complained, they did what they had to do for their families and never showed the stress they must have been under. They forged lifelong friendships that time and distance couldn’t separate. Two of her best friends were there when she passed, both coming from miles away, a true testament to friendships that spanned over 40 years.

We would like to thank mom’s physicians, Dr Giesbrecht and Dr. Kass for the kind and compassionate care during her illness. We would also like to thank the true angels on earth that work at the Grace ICU. They have an amazing team of Doctors, nurses, health care aides and communication clerks. You all made our stay there as comfortable as could be and we felt like you became part of our family. Be proud of the work you do and the compassion and caring you show to everyone. We can’t tell you how comforting it was that we were able to spend the last few days with you. We loved everyone there but we would especially like to thank these wonderful nurses; Precious, Shauna, Corrine, Sandra, Wendy, and Ruth. We also would like to thank Doctors: Kumar, Joshua, Easton and Mallick.

Janet (Mom) we will miss you always and never forget the warm and gentle person you were.

A celebration of her life will take place on Wednesday, August 3, 2011 at 10:00 AM at Thomson “In The Park” Funeral Home and Cemetery, 1291 McGillivary Blvd.

In lieu of flowers we would ask that you make a donation to honour mom to the Children’s Wish Foundation.
