Mum died on October 6, 2011 at Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg two weeks prior to her 93rd birthday. She is survived by her two sons, Terry (Barb) and John (Debbie), grandchildren Christine (Rob) and Elizabeth and Blair. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews in Canada and England. Mum was predeceased by her husband, Earl and daughter, Marilyn.
Mum was born and raised in Cobham England. As a young girl she loved school and athletics. Mum always wanted to be a teacher however the economics of the thirties and the war prevented her from doing so. Mum remained close to her brothers and sister as well as Joan (cousin) until their deaths.
Mum met Dad in England while he serving with the Royal Canadian Engineers in early 1942. Mum and Dad were married October 17, 1942 at St. Andrews Church in Cobham, England. Mum and Marilyn came to Winnipeg in May of 1945 and were later joined by Dad in August of 1945.
Mum and Dad enjoyed many years together camping and traveling with their family. Mum and Dad returned many times to England to see family and friends. The family cottage at Lester Beach became the family focal point for over 25 years. Mum also traveled many times with her grandchildren to theme parks and beaches.
Mum was very active with Women’s Auxiliary at St. Patrick and St. Jude Church and volunteered for Meals on Wheels for 25 years. Mum loved knitting scarves and mitts for her family especially her grandchildren. Mum enjoyed crossword puzzles, sporting events and was an avid walker. She was interested in current events, and was well read and loved discussing these with family and friends. Mum loved animals of all kinds and was a supporter of the Winnipeg Human Society.
Mum dealt with war and personal tragedies and always bounced back with a smile saying ”how fortunate I am”. Mum was a fighter right to the end. She loved life but didn’t fear death.
Many thanks to the wonderful staff of N1 at Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg and a special thank you to personal companion, Irene, with who Mum spent many happy hours.
