Jean Mary Flett

Jean was born on October 26, 1927, in Hearst, Ontario. The family moved to Manitoba in 1930, and Jean grew up on the family farm 3 miles south of Komarno. She attended McMillan School right across highway 7 from their home, and played baseball on the Slovak women's team.

Jean moved to Winnipeg at age 16, where she lived in a boarding house near the U of W, along with a couple of close friends. She enjoyed going occasionally to the symphony, opera, ballet, and jazz clubs.

Jean loved bowling, where she met Beverley Flett, who she married in 1954. They lived on Broadway Ave. in Winnipeg, and had a daughter Marianne in 1958, followed by sons Gordon in 1960 and Bruce in 1961. The family moved to a house in Windsor Park in 1962, where Jean lived for the rest of her life. Their last son Jerry arrived in 1965.

Jean was an excellent seamstress who worked for many of Winnipeg's sportswear companies during her life. She was also an excellent cook, who created delicious meals for family and friends. When her husband Bev passed away suddenly in 1979, Jean soldiered on in the best way she could.

Jean continued to be an accomplished bowler into her 80s, and loved going to Club Regent in her later years, travelling there on her own by Handy Transit or cab. She also planted and tended to her large backyard vegetable garden, and front yard flower gardens every year, up to and including 2025.

She was fiercely proud of her Ukrainian heritage, spoke the language, and celebrated Ukrainian Christmas and New Year her entire life.

Jean was predeceased by her father Thomas Zaber, mother Annie Zaber (nee Wacyk), husband Beverley, daughter Marianne Coulter and son Bruce. She leaves behind her sons Jerry (Larissa) and Gordon, grandsons Dale Pennock and Evan Flett, and granddaughter Caitlyn Flett. She will also be lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews, extended family, and friends.

Her funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 22, 2026 at 10:00 AM at Thomson "In The Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd.
