September 16, 1922 August 26, 2012 It is with deep sadness that we announce the death at age 89 of Jeanne Allen, August 26, at Charleswood Care Centre. Jeanne is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Jan and Alan Tuffee of Gravesend, England, many cousins in England, and many nephews and nieces in Canada. Jeanne was predeceased by her parents, Sydney and Dorothea Allen, and, in 1996, by her partner of forty years, Nancy Turriff. Born in Swanscombe, Kent, England in 1922, Jeanne was educated at Convent High School, Gravesend, working briefly for Barclay's Bank before joining the Women's Auxiliary of the Royal Air Force in 1942 where she served as a meteorologist for Bomber Command with the rank of corporal. Released from duty in 1946, she undertook teacher training and taught for several years in England and as an exchange teacher in Port Credit, Ontario. In 1958, she immigrated to Canada, serendipitously meeting on the airplane from England the president of Bulloch Furnace (later ICG Manufacturing), of Winnipeg, who offered her the job she would have until retirement in 1982 that of purchasing agent, in which, as a woman, she was a pioneering figure. In her spare time and in retirement, Jeanne was an avid curler. She was for a long time a member of the Grain Exchange Curling Club and the Transcona Curling Club. It was as skip of her team for the latter club that she won the 1969 Manitoba Bonspiel's Hudson Bay Trophy. Jeanne was also an avid golfer, a member of the Transcona Golf Club and, later, the Elmhurst Golf and Country Club. Together with Nancy, she enjoyed travel in the U.K., Switzerland, Bermuda, and various destinations in Canada and the U.S. True to her roots in England, the Air Force, and in education, Jeanne was meticulous, conscientious, and articulate at work and at play, conservative in many of her values, but at the same time, generous, funny, adventurous and brave, taking a flyer on a new life in new country, arriving in the middle of a cold Winnipeg winter. She came intending to stay, and those of us who remain and remember her are grateful she did. Family and friends would like to thank the staff of Charleswood Care Centre for the kindness and attention showed Jeanne the last year. At Jeanne's request, cremation has taken place. A memorial service took place Tuesday, September 4, 2012, at 2:00 p.m., at Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nancy Turriff and Jeanne Allen Fund at the Winnipeg Foundation, 1350 One Lombard Place, Winnipeg, MB, R3B 0X3.
