With broken hearts, we are saddened to announce that after a full, well lived life, Joy Jarvis has passed away. Her death was sudden, occurring 39 days before her 80th birthday. She leaves to mourn sister Colleen Robinson (Tom), cousins Marjorie Puhacz (George), Eileen Best (Neil), Linda Turberfield, Brenda Harris, Karen Perry, Sheila Perry, Marilyn Beech, second cousins Lynn Jaworski (Charlie) and Rick McCulloch, son Jim Matthewman (Mary), daughter Corie Siddle (Al), Grandchildren Jessica, Chantelle, Jim (jr), Tracy, Ashley and Shane and great grandchild Erica. Also left to mourn are several extended relatives and many friends. She is predeceased by grandchild Stephanie, parents Ruth and Jack Bushby, and Uncle Harry, who was like a brother.
Joy was born in St. Boniface on October 15, 1941 and lived her entire life in Winnipeg, growing up in Elmwood and Morse place. She lived in Transcona for several years, before moving to North Kildonan, where she spent over half her life. She married twice, to Jim Matthewman in 1961, and Mel Jarvis in 1989.
As a young lady, she worked at Eatons in the candy department, before becoming a full time mom when son Jim arrived in 1962, and later Corie in 1967. As her kids grew up, she returned to work, spending time at Winnipeg Enterprises, Midway Chrysler and teaching Drivers Ed, before settling into a fulfilling career at Thompson Dorfman Sweatman, retiring in 2007. Joy enjoyed fashion, so the TDS time was a perfect fit for her.
Joy was a dedicated mother first and foremost. She treasured her children, grandchildren and great grandchild, embracing every moment with them. A lifetime highlight, in 2008, was a trip with 15 members of her family to Disney World to celebrate her retirement. She wore the Disney hoodie until the end.
Joy claimed she was not a big traveller, but she, her parents and siblings made several train trips to visit relatives in Vancouver. In later years, she loved going away for weekends to Grand Forks, ND and Minneapolis, MN. Other destinations include South Padre Island, Wisconsin Dells, Seattle and numerous 2 or 3 day trips around Manitoba and the Northern States.
Joy was never far away from a phone. It was commonplace for her to put a first conversation on hold so she could go tell a second caller she would get back to them. She often had several calls lined up that she had to make.
Shopping was a passion. If it was an Olympic sport, she would have won Gold. Over her lifespan her total accumulated time in stores would have been measured in months and years.
Joy was a very good cook and loved to entertain. Barbecues, with every kind of salad, slice and dessert were commonplace, and her baking, especially around Christmas, was legendary. You were not allowed to leave her house hungry!
If success in life could be measured by your circle of friends, Joy would be in the top percentile. She met friends easily and had some that dated back to her school days.
Special thanks to the Grace hospital nurses and doctors on 4 North. She was kept pain free for her final days and allowed to pass with grace.
Lastly, thank you mom for all you did for us. We’ll take it from here, but save us a spot.
