February 19, 1948 – June 4, 2011
Gentle. Strong. Creative. Determined. Inquisitive. Imaginative. Affectionate. Kind. These are just some of the words that Karl’s family would use to describe him and his energy. Karl’s energy – his spirit – experienced its freedom on June 4th, while surrounded by the deep love of his family.
He will be lovingly remembered, greatly missed, cherished and honoured by: Diane, the love-of-his-life and wife of 40 years, daughter Merrell-Ann (Anne), daughter Reegan (Laren), son Oliver, grandson Alex (son of Reegan and Laren), brother-in-law Gary (Tina), sister-in-law Wendy (Walter), brother-in-law Ryan (Carol), and many nieces and nephews.
Karl was predeceased by: father Frederick, mother Flora, stepmother Anita, brother Erwin (Dinah), brother John (Bernie), father-in-law Perry, mother-in-law Dorothy, and brother-in-law Ib (Wendy).
Karl was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in the mid-1990s. He loved to be active in mind and body, which made this diagnosis difficult for him. He was a man who enjoyed life’s challenges, considered Parkinson’s disease to be one of them, and never gave up trying or hoping, despite the physical challenges this disease presented.
As a mechanical engineer, he ran his own business, Brenco Mechanical, for as long as he was able to do so. He continued to fix broken vehicles, renovate his and Diane’s homes, restore old vehicles to perfection, and invent new tools. He loved listening to the powerful music of the artists he enjoyed – The Doors, Leonard Cohen, and Andrea Bocelli. He took time to relax with a game of golf or pool, by having dinner with his family, or spending warm summer nights talking with his wife in the veranda. He loved being in his home – his place of contemplation and comfort. Karl will remain an inspiration to his family and will be forever missed.
A memorial service will be held for family. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to The Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada in his honour 350 St. Mary Ave, Winnipeg, MB R3C 3J2.
