With sadness we announce the passing of Kenneth Edward Peckett, 76 years, at the Riverview Health Centre on Saturday, October 6, 2012.
Ken will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 50 years, Ina Ruth, his children: Marilyn (Derek); Greg (Liane); Jeffrey; and Carla; along with five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren: Michael/Carly (Kaelan, Abrielle, Amelia), Adam/Lindsay (Alia, Liam), Amber/Dustin, Geneviève/Darryl (Juliette), and Kyle, as well as his brother Frank (Ellie) and sister June. Ken was predeceased by his father, Frank in 1991 and his mother, Anna in 1992.
Ken came from a long line of machinists and, from an early age, showed a great interest and aptitude for all things fixable. His mother recounted how, one winter when he was young, he disassembled his whole motorcycle, bringing it piece by piece into the basement to work on over the winter then putting it all back together in time for a spring ride. One big restoration project fondly remembered by his family for keeping him occupied was the restoration of his 1929 Nash Coupe. Evidence of being a devoted wife, Ina indulged Ken in his passion for riding motorcycles. In one of their younger years, she made the long return trip on the back of his motorcycle from Winnipeg to California. (Way to go, Mom!) He continued his love for riding until shortly before his passing.
Hunting and fishing were other passions that Ina also indulged. Sometimes she waited patiently at home for his return from big game hunting in the Souris area over the decades or accompanied him on his many salmon and steelhead trout fishing excursions around Vancouver Island. Dad was known for his love of ice cream that was inherited from his mother, a love that continues today in his children and grandchildren.
Ken’s professional work career began when he was about 17 years old in the parts department of McDonald’s Aircraft before he went to Standard Aero. From there, he braved the cold for the Government of Canada’s efforts at the DEW line around Churchill, then worked at World Wide Airways (Mont Joli, Quebec), and maintained a float plane fleet in Sioux Narrows, before working first in Ottawa and then back to Winnipeg providing loyal service as a mechanical engineer for Transport Canada for 31 years. Ken’s work from Hanger T72 brought him to interesting places in the far north such as Alert, the furthest-most northern settlement in Canada, Baker Lake, Chesterfield Inlet, Frobisher Bay, and Coral Harbour to name a few.
With his retirement in August 1990, Ken and Ina packed up a few belongings and headed west to British Columbia to start a new life in sunny Duncan on Vancouver Island where they remained for 22 years until their family welcomed them home in August, 2012.
A celebration of life and remembrance will be held on Saturday, October 13th at Waverley Church, 2171 Waverley Street at 1:00 p.m. The interment will take place at Waverley Memorial Gardens, 1501 Waverley Street followed by a reception back at Waverley Church.
In lieu of flowers and in honour of Ken’s love of pets, memorial contributions may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society 45 Hurst Way R3T 0R3.
The family wishes to acknowledge the kind care provided by staff at the Grace Hospital and the Riverview Health Centre.
