It is with profound sadness our family announces the peaceful passing at home of Kim Marshall, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and respected Sensei. Kim took his final breath enfolded in a circle of love with his wife and children.
Left to cherish and honour Kim’s memory is his loving wife Sharon Alward; his beloved children Michael (Stacey), Jamie (Jennie) and Melissa Stein (G.W.); precious grandchildren Wyatt, Quinn, Rory, Parker, Miles and Abigail, and his brother David (Khim). Kim will be deeply mourned by the martial arts community, especially the children, women and men of Meibukan Goju Karate Winnipeg and Canadian and international Dojo Directors of Meibukan Karate.
Kim was born in Kitchener, Ontario to Edwin and Elizabeth (Windsor) Marshall. He deeply mourned the tragic early death of his mother. Kim proudly followed his father’s footsteps into police work. Sargeant Kim Marshall, CD, was a 21-year veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces military police and a former member of the Service’s elite Close Personal Protection Team (CPPT).
Kim was fond of saying that on the Friday of his retirement; he took off his military police uniform and exchanged it on Monday for a karate gi. He leaves a profound legacy to the thousands of karate-ka he taught over the decades, including over 200 of his students who achieved their black belts, following their Sensei’s path of honour.
Kim’s dedication to his career was surpassed only by his strong and abiding love for his three children. In later years, he took great delight in his grandchildren, together with his wife Sharon. Sharon was his “Sun, Moon and Stars” and they shared a deep closeness and eternal love. Their love story remains an inspiration.
Kim Sensei, 6th Dan (black belt degree), Okinawa Meibukan Goju-Ryu Karate-do, Dojo Director, Meibukan Goju Karate Winnipeg, lived the code of Bushido to the end. In every sense a true warrior, Kim was the embodiment of bushido values: loyalty, courage, honesty, compassion, honour and a profound respect for life. He faced death calmly and with courage.
Sensei Kim’s funeral took place on Saturday, October 8, 2016 at 2:00 pm at St. Luke’s Anglican Church at 130 Nassau Street.
