Thank you Larry for being such a wonderful Father-In-Law to me! I will miss you dearly.

My deepest sympathy to the Vanderhyde family. Larry was a gentleman’s gentleman. His enthusiasm for carving and the carving world was only surpassed by his willingness to encourage and and share  with others. His goodness and gentleness will not be forgotten.I feel blessed by having Larry encourage and play a large part in my carving life. A good friend and mentor,he will be truly missed. It was such a honor to meet your dad when he came to visit you. I remember he asked me for a ride in my Corvette, and said he really enjoyed it.

Larry Vanderhyde Remembered
Larry Vanderhyde nurtured and advanced the interests of the waterfowl carving community in Manitoba for over 30 years.  
Larry took up bird carving while working at Jostens in Winnipeg as a way to decompress from the demands of the workplace.  A naturally gifted craftsman, he quickly became an accomplished decorative duck carver, amassing a number of best of show awards.  Generous by nature and having formed a kinship with the carving community he joined the ranks of Prairie Canada Carvers’ Association during its formative years.  Drawing on his business acumen and leadership skills he served as competition rules chairperson for 12 years helping the competition to grow and become a major North America carving event.   Following that he served 18 years as a competition waterfowl judge, bringing into play his skill as an established carver and extensive knowledge of waterfowl form and function.  Competition carvers highly valued his thoughtful and inspiring critiques, attributing his help for their advancement.   He brought the same level of commitment to judging entries at the Oak Hammock Marsh Guild Decoy Carving Competition (lasting a similar amount of time).  He also judged birds at the Reflections of Nature Competition in Saskatoon.  Bob Lavender of Saskatoon echoed the sentiment of scores of carvers when he said “What distinguishes Larry as a mentor is his ability to encourage and motive you to do better while offering helpful and thorough advice.  His enthusiasm and love for carving is infectious”.  
 Fittingly in 2015 Larry was awarded the Prairie Canada Carvers Award of Excellence for his dedication in promoting and engendering the art of bird carving in western Canada.  His contributions are also recognized by a Larry Vanderhye cocktail carving purchase award offered annually by the Oak Hammock Marsh Carving Guild. I have the privilege of working with Larry in Jostens Canada for many years. He is a true leader and a gentleman. He cares about his family and people around him a lot. He earned respect from his staffs peers and leader. We truly missed Larry.

I am so sad to hear of Larry’s passing.  Larry was a friend and mentor.  He taught me so much about the fine points of carving.  His door was always open for a visit, and a cup of coffee, and he was always willing to critique my current carving project.
I will miss our time together driving through the Whiteshell looking for ducks migrating in spring, our lunches together, and sharing stories about hunting and fishing.  In past summers Larry would drive over to my place in Lac du Bonnet for lunch, coffee, and a few hours of fishing Goldeye.  We shared so many common interests.
He was a fine person, a gentleman, and a true friend.  I shall miss him very much.

Our sincere condolences to the Vanderhyde family. I had the honor and pleasure to work with Larry at Jostens for a ten year period from 1988 to 1998. In that time, Larry was the utmost caring and thoughtful leader/plant manager at the Winnipeg Jewelry Plant on Paramount. I first met Larry in 2015 during my debut at the PCCA Carving Show. Although I placed well, I sought his critique on my work. Larry had so much wisdom to share. At the end of our allotted time, he offered to mentor me. I was shocked and honored, and I quickly accepted. Since then, I have spent countless mornings at the kitchen table – initially with both Larry and Char, and later with only Larry. It became a ritual to bring chocolate chip cookies as "payment" for his time.

Larry was a true gentleman, kind-hearted, and a loyal friend. He generously offered his time and advice, and his guidance has made me the award-winning carver I am today. I will deeply miss our times together.

Condolences to the entire family. Was a pleasure and privilege to have known him.  Larry was a real gentleman and an inspiration. RIP.
