It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Lawrence (Larry) David Muldrew on February 21, 2024 at the age of 71 after a long illness. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 48 years Gail (nee Gouriluk), his daughters Dawn Allen, Nicole Atkinson, and Leanne; sons-in-law Clint Allen and Mike Atkinson; and grandchildren Kayden and Arabella Allen who brought him great joy and laughter. He also leaves behind his brother Dennis, and sister Betty Lodewyks; in-laws, Hank, Gary, Helene, Rob, Honor, Brian, Patricia, Bruce and Myong; a large extended family, including uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews; and many friends. Larry was pre-deceased by his parents Cecil and Eva Muldrew.
Larry was born May 24, 1952 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He grew up in Fort Rouge and attended Lord Roberts School, Riverview School and Churchill High School. He then went to the University of Manitoba, and St. John's College earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science. After graduating he spent one last stress-free summer working as a lifeguard in Paint Lake, Manitoba where he met Gail. It was love at first sight, and a short month later they were engaged. He married Gail on April 24, 1976. They raised their three daughters in North Kildonan, balancing life between sports, the Elmwood-Kildonan YM-YWCA and Victoria Beach. He began his career as a systems analyst for Greater Winnipeg Gas, which morphed into ICG, Centra Gas, and finally Manitoba Hydro. He had a successful career until his retirement in 2016.
Larry enjoyed the lake life to the fullest after spending every summer since 1956 at Victoria Beach, with Larry and Gail eventually making it their permanent residence in 2007. He spent many years lifeguarding, teaching swimming, and splashing in the lake with his kids, grand kids, and anyone who would jump on his back to enjoy a "whale dive". Larry always approached everything with a sense of humour first, then with practically. He taught everyone you are never to old to be goofy, and not to take things too seriously. He loved to putter around the cottage, spending his time with his beloved wood splitter, arranging and rearranging his wood piles, and giving “killer chipmunks” the ability to fly. Larry was an avid Winnipeg Blue Bomber's fan, with many happy memories travelling across Canada with Gail and the Johnston family partying at multiple Grey Cups.
After retirement, Larry and Gail began to do some exploring, visiting Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland - which completed Larry’s goal of visiting all ten Canadian provinces. They also travelled to Barbados, Costa Rica and took a memorable family trip to Florida. He was very proud to journey to Rio de Janeiro in 2016 to cheer on daughter Leanne in the Paralympic Games.
Larry will be remembered by his family and friends as the most wonderful, comical, goofy, fun loving and most positive person they knew. He was someone they could always count on and lean on for support. If you asked for a hand, he would first offer humorous applause, followed by genuine help.
Cremation has taken place. At Larry's request no service will be held. Everyone is invited to honour Larry’s life by raising a glass in his memory at your next occasion.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Canadian Cancer Society in Larry’s memory.
The family extends their thanks to all the health care providers who tended to Larry over the past few years, and convey a deep appreciation for the people of GH-3 at HSC who took such special care of Larry in his final months.
