It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Lennart Axel Hilding. Len passed away quickly on Tuesday 25 February 2020. He was 92 years old.
Len is fondly remembered by his beloved daughter Roberta Leigh and son-in-law Ovie Desrochers. He was known as “Poppy” to five cherished grandchildren; Sarah Patricia (Todd), Stephen Hilding (Nicole), Chelsea (Vern), Colin (Jamie), and Ian (Jennifer). Poppy also had sixteen great-grandchildren.
Len was predeceased by his darling wife Patricia Hilding (nee McCourt) on 28 April 2015; their treasured son Patric Hilding on 15 May 1989; his only sibling Bertha Hilding; and his parents Ingeborg and Otto Hilding.
Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on 10 December 1927, to Swedish immigrants, Len grew up being proud of his roots. Len worked as a Telephone Engineer with MTS for 39 years. Len and Pat were married on 19 May 1950, at the height of the Big Winnipeg Flood. Len and Pat were a team. They built the family cottage at Victoria Beach in 1950. All summers were spent at the lake, and for many winters they enjoyed being snowbirds in Rockport, Texas. Len drove to Texas, and would often take Pat to Thief River Falls so she could do some shopping.
Like any good “Scandihoovian”, Len loved his hockey, fish, trivia, watching football and the Lawrence Welk Show on Sunday nights. He was a stubborn Swede. He could be deliciously cranky to those closest to him, but was a kind man. Len was very intelligent and a good conversationalist. He loved listening to big band music, and reading about war history.
A private funeral service and internment was held on 04 March 2020 at Green Acres Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made in Len’s memory to a favourite charity.
