Lorna passed away Monday, July 15th, 2013 at the St. Boniface Hospital after a brief illness.
She was born in Winnipeg on December 22nd, 1931.
Lorna is survived by her brother Donovan McCarthy (Marian) of Winnipeg; her sister Patricia Jacobs of Greensboro, North Carolina; her nephews Paul McCarthy of Bedford, New Hampshire and Jay Jacobs of Kingsport, Tennesee; her nieces Marcia McCarthy of Calgary and Patty Jacobs-Berman (Jeff) of Baltimore, Maryland and Linda Jacobs-Kalodner (David) of South Orange, New Jersey. She was predeceased by her brother-in-law, Jack Jacobs.
Lorna attended Tuxedo and Riverbend schools. She started her working career at Great West Life and later joined the staff at the Winnipeg Football Club for many years during the Bud Grant/Ken Ploen era. She made lifelong friends among staff, players and executives of the “Bombers”.
Later in life, Lorna and a partner started Allegro Travel in the Grain Exchange Building and built it into a thriving operation. It helped to have the “Bombers” travel account! During the years at Allegro, Lorna travelled the world. She was a raconteur and her stories of her travels and years with the Bombers were fascinating and grew better with the years.
Lorna also was an excellent bridge player and during her long retirement she claimed “thousands” of victories.
The family would like to thank Lorna’s special “lady friends” who made the Salisbury House and Rae and Jerry’s restaurants their favorite meeting places. Her fridge was always full of Rae and Jerry’s party sandwiches.
We especially extend our appreciation to Lorna’s longtime friend Becky Parkes for her amazing kindness to Lorna for 32 years and particularly during her recent illness.
Thanks also to the staff at St. Boniface Hospital for their warm kindness and care to Lorna over the past five weeks.
Join us for a celebration of Lorna’s life at Rae and Jerry’s, 1405 Portage Ave on Wednesday, July 31st, 2013 between 2:00 – 5:00 pm.
