It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Lorne Jamison on August 15, 2022 at the age of 72. Lorne was a loving husband to his wife Wendy of 49 years, a proud father of his children, Leanne and Chris, a caring father-in-law to Ryan, and a dear friend known affectionately as “Stumpy” to many.
Lorne will also be greatly missed by his sister, Joan, sisters-in law Linda (Brian) and Brenda (Alfred), as well as by many nieces, nephews, and friends. His fur babies, Tucker and Charlie, and grand puppies, Bella and Boden, will surely miss cleaning up Lorne’s crumbs.
Lorne was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and grew up playing hockey at any local rink he could find. His skill and love of the game allowed him to play his junior jockey career in Brandon, Manitoba in the late 60’s. After retiring his skates as a player, Lorne continued to contribute to the game that he loved so much. He served a referee in both the WHL and the MJHA for many years. He often boasted about being able to ref the World Junior Hockey Championships. Later, Lorne would pass down his knowledge of the game by serving as a coach to many of Chris’ minor hockey teams. Lorne also loved to play golf from an early age, and throughout his life it became his true amity. He adored the art of the game and enjoyed many golf trips to Bemidji, Arizona, South Carolina, and everywhere in between. His favourite was always the annual trip to Clear Lake for the Grey Owl tournament, of which he won two. He could be found on the golf course daily no matter rain or shine, and he was always looking forward to the 19th hole with his pals afterwards.
Lorne worked for the Nutty Club confectionary in Winnipeg before starting his career at the Canadian Grain Commission. There he worked as an entry grain sampler up to Chief Grain Inspector. Lorne retired after 35 years of service, however he needed to feel busy and productive and so continued work under contract for both the Society of General Surveyance (SGS) and Parish & Heimbecker for several years.
Lorne was always the life of the party, even if there wasn’t one. He loved music and dancing the night away on New Year’s trips to South Beach. His smile and laugh were contagious and could brighten anyone’s day. He enjoyed traveling and over the years took many trips across Canada, the United States, and even overseas to Turkey. But, his heart always belonged at the beach. He adored the Caribbean and he and Wendy enjoyed many winter getaways there. Lorne was a passionate and animated sports fan who enthusiastically cheered on the Green Bay Packers and his beloved Winnipeg Jets. We are certain that next season the boys will have a heavenly coach behind the bench with them.
A celebration of Lorne’s life will be held on Saturday August 27, 2022 at 1 o’clock in the afternoon at Klassen Funeral Home, 1897 Henderson Highway Winnipeg, MB. We invite you to join us as we remember the larger than life person that Lorne was.
We would like to take the opportunity to thank the staff in the MICU ward at St. Boniface General Hospital for their exemplary care and compassion. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Lorne’s name to the Winnipeg Humane Society, or an animal shelter of your choice.
