It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Maggie van den Beuken on Tuesday, October 1, 2019 at the age of 73 years at her home. She is survived by her husband John of 46 years of marriage; daughters Krista (Bogdan), and Julianna (Mark). Maggie was born in Winnipeg in 1945 to John and Anne Masyk. She grew up with 3 sisters, Maryann (Ken), Patricia (Bob), and Victoria (Steve) in Winnipeg’s North End. After graduating high school, Maggie began her lifelong pursuit of education and bettering herself with the goal of helping others. Her first position was with St. Amant’s as a Nurse’s Aide, and then she worked as an Instructor at Arc Industries from 1968 – 1973 with Adults with Disabilities. During that time, Maggie met her future husband John in 1971. They married in August of 1973, and celebrated the birth of their first daughter Krista in 1975 and their second daughter Julianna in 1977. During the girl’s early years Maggie stayed home to raise her family, and when they were a bit older she renewed her pursuit of education. She returned to upgrade her high school courses at West Kildonan Collegiate, graduating in 1986. Once her girls were self-sufficient, she obtained a position with the Winnipeg School Division as a Teacher’s Aid for Children with Disabilities. She worked at various locations within the school division over the course of 22 years. During that time she continued to improve her education, first by attending the University of Winnipeg, graduating with a Bachelor’s of Art as well as a degree in Conflict Resolution in 1999; then earning a Diploma in Applied Counseling from Red River College in 2003. Even with her busy schedule of work, education and raising her family, she still found time to participate in Y Neighbours and the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority group. Maggie retired from her career in education in 2009, spending the remainder of her years enjoying her family. Also left to mourn are her Brother-in-law Robert (Margaret) from Edmonton, as well as numerous nieces and nephews near and far, and friends. The family would like to thank Dr. Sheila Domke for her ongoing care and support of Maggie, and special thanks to her home care worker Joy. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Maggie’s memory to the charity of their choice. A Funeral Service will take place at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church; 748 Keewatin Street, Winnipeg on Wednesday, October 9, 2019 at 10 a.m. with a public viewing starting at 9:30 a.m. Interment will take place at Green Acres Funeral Home and Cemetery; Hwy #1 East at Navin Road, Winnipeg at approximately 11:45 a.m., followed by a time of refreshments and fellowship in the Green Acres Heritage Reception Room.
