The peaceful passing of Maureen Lodge-Zaparnick on January 10, has left us with great sadness.
She will be lovingly remembered by her devoted husband Steve, her three grown children Ashley, Christopher and Whitney, her sister Marjorie Stevens (Kerry), her niece Kerri (Salki) and her little daughter Alexandra, nephew Matthew (Salki), sister-in-law Evelyn (Gerry), the Hornbeck cousins Hewitt (Jackie) , Lynne and Rick (Margie) and their families, the Lodge family in Montreal, Auntie Vee and her many close friends whose lives she touched in so many ways.
(Victoria) Maureen was born on January 9, 1950 to Margaret and Denzil Lodge, on her dad’s birthday. She grew up in the north end of Winnipeg and attended Faraday School. The family then moved to North Kildonan where she attended River East College.
When she met Steve through friends, they knew that they were meant for each other, and married a few months later on July 6, 1982. From the beginning they were soul mates, a devoted couple and doting parents to their 3 children. Family was everything to them, a trait passed on from her mom. Birthdays, Christmas and Thanksgiving were always family get together. That was not an option. But Maureen and Steve had another family of close friends and neighbors that were considered family in so many ways. They also came to the birthdays and thanksgiving celebrations….the more the merrier.
Maureen’s calling was to be a teacher, and she loved what she did. This is where she had another “ family”…work associates and students who loved and adored her. She taught with love and kindness, and truly cared about each and every one of them. The students she taught were blessed to have her. So many of these students kept in touch with her over the years and made sure to include her in a number of “reunions” they held.
Maureen was also creative and “crafty.” Everyone that knew Maureen will have something she made for them as a gift. Her snow people, her stick people, her amazing Mittens are famous, and she could make something out of anything. Those gifts took time and were made with such love, and her friends and family knew it. Those gifts are treasured.
Maureen also loved her garden. She loved to add new flowers, new plants, new designs and new pathways in her lovely back yard where her family and friends were always warmly welcomed. Last year she added a beautiful Zen garden with rocks, special plants, a fountain, it was a peaceful place where she could just contemplate life. Maureen was never without a project, and Steve was always there to help make sure it happened.
Funeral service will be held on Sunday, January 26 at 2: 00 P.M. at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard. Private family interment to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Maureen’s memory can be made to CancerCare Manitoba:
