Art was a true example of what it means to live a long and fruitful life. His determination and presence will be greatly missed by his sons Glen (Donna), Wayne (Joann) and grandchildren Ashlee, Josh, and Shayne (Jake). Art was predeceased by his wife Flo, his parents and 12 siblings.
Art was a born and raised Manitoban. He grew up on his family farm in St. Norbert, until receiving his conscription in 1944. Art was taken across Canada serving as a guard for prisoners of war. However, it was not until a dance in 1949 that his life would change; where he met the love of his life, Flo. Together they started a family of four, and went on to celebrate over 60 years of Marriage. Art and Flo were active members of the St. Vital Parish in Fort Garry for many years.
Those close to Art knew especially of his lively and nostalgic recollections. His 40 year career as a hydraulic forge press operator at Manitoba Bridge ensured he had no shortage of amusing stories. Even during retirement, Art was a master of his craft, taking interest in any project where he could whip out his trusty sledgehammer. Art was our blacksmith, gardener, storyteller, polka dancer, self-proclaimed Prince, exuberant bingo player and beloved prankster. Art and Flo had a passion for travel, with their favourite spot being Hawaii. Their summers were spent at Brereton Lake, but no matter the season they had an unwavering presence in both their children and grandchildren’s lives.
We also wish to extend many thanks to the Sterling House Staff, who were like a second family to him.
Art has filled our hearts with cherished stories and memories. We will miss our father and Papa dearly. Dad, please give Mom a hug from all of us. We love you.
A celebration of life service for Art will be held Monday, October 24, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd, Winnipeg, MB R3T5Y4.
