

Rudy Schilling, beloved husband to Lois for almost 65 years, and father to Karen, Heather and Karl (Sophie) passed away surrounded by family on May 2, 2025. He was 90 years old. Also remaining to cherish his memory is his sister Audrey and his grandsons, Alex, Dominique, Scott, Oscar, and Alistair.
Rudy came from humble beginnings on Magnus Avenue in Winnipeg’s North End. His mother and father raised him to value education and have a strong work ethic. He loved school and athletics. He won the Governor General’s Academic Medal in grade 12. He played high school football for Issac Newton. Basketball for the Winnipeg Light Infantry team that won national championships in 1952 and 1953. The basketball team was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. He also played basketball, and was captain, for the University of Manitoba in 1956 and 1957. Both of these teams were inducted into the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011.
Rudy graduated Engineering from the University of Manitoba in 1957 and received an Athlone Fellowship to continue his graduate studies in England. He married Lois in London, and together they returned to Winnipeg to start a family. He began his academic career at the University of Manitoba in the department of Engineering. An international project took Rudy and Lois, with their two daughters to Thailand. With an international team of academics, they built and established the University of Khon Kaen in Thailand. He retired from the University of Manitoba at the age of 72. For his role as Associate Dean (Building Initiative) the staff lounge was dedicated and named in his honour.
Tennis, skiing, cycling, reading, learning, and gardening were his lifelong passions.
The family would like to sincerely thank all of the staff at the Health Science Centre who cared for and supported Rudy and his family in his final days. We also extend our thanks and appreciation to friends and relatives who reached out and offered assistance, kindness and beautiful stories about Dad.
There will be a Celebration of Life at 2:00 pm on May 16, 2025, at Thomson “In the Park”, 1291 McGillivray Blvd.
