Obituary of Sakuntala Sharma
IN THE CARE OF

Thomson In The Park Funeral Home and Cemetery

Forever in our Hearts

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Sakuntala Sharma on February 13, 2026 at the age of 102 years.

She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her family; Spouse Gyan Prakash Sharma;

Children, Kumar Satish (Angelina Di Santo) and Kumar Suneel Sharma (Kimberley Crass);

Grandchildren Anita, Lauren and Julia (Kumar Satish) and Siena and Maya (Kumar Suneel) and

Great-Grandchildren Samuel and Leila (Anita) and Thomas and Margot (Lauren).

Sakuntala Sharma (nee Surath) was born in the town of Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, India. She obtained her medical degrees from Andhra Medical College in Visakhapatnam. During her studies she met Gyan Prakash, a fellow student. While in Visakhapatnam the happy couple had two sons, Kumar Satish and Kumar Suneel. During this time, she spent a period as a Rural Health Officer in Simachalam. In 1968, the family immigrated to Canada, and in the following 50 years Sakuntala and Gyan built a life for themselves in Winnipeg. Dr. Sakuntala Sharma ran a successful family medicine practice in Southdale, with privileges at Victoria Hospital, while Gyan worked at the St. Boniface Hospital. The family prospered and grew with the addition of grand- and great-grand-children. Sakuntala had charming personality and was loved by family, friends and patients. She was a ray of sunshine to all she met. Her friendly open manner will be fondly remembered by all who crossed her path. She had an artistic side and did some beautiful drawings when she was younger. She also liked to knit and sew. Always fun at family gatherings, she loved to play party games and enjoyed winning at them. Her cooking of the traditional Andhra dishes was one of her passions and her legendary chicken curry was loved by all. We will all miss her immensely.

Om Shaanti

A celebration of her life will be held at a future time.

Our family would also like to thank the Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Services and the Health Science Centre Emergency Department, for the timely and compassionate care received.
