Vern is survived by his wife Betty, his children Rick (Simone) and Nancy (Joel), grandchildren Stephen, Lyndsay, Kristian, Hayley and Ian, and his brother Bill (Gladys) of Calgary. He was predeceased by his brothers Dan and Jim.
Vern was born in Winnipeg, attended Kelvin High School and began his long working life with the CPR at Portage and Main, transferring to Canadian Pacific Airlines in 1960. He later worked in the travel industry until his retirement in 2007. Vern and Betty had the good fortune of flying throughout the world; from the Caribbean, United Kingdom, Europe and North Africa to Asia and the South Pacific. He once had the dubious pleasure of being on board a run-away camel that travelled, for some unknown reason, the length of the Great Pyramid of Giza. This clearly marked the end of his camel riding adventures.
Vern was a Mason, as well as a longtime member of the Lions Club and Skal Club.
Funeral services and reception will be held at St. Georges Anglican Church, 168 Wilton Avenue and Grosvenor, Monday, April 20, at 11:00 a.m. with The Reverend Simon Blaikie officiating. Interment to follow at Thomson “In the Park” Cemetery, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at West Park Manor.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dad’s favourite charity, the Salvation Army, or a charity of your choice.
