Adelaide (Bobbie) Bowman Hoffman, 94, of Winston-Salem, formerly of Gibsonia, Pennsylvania, died Friday, February 22, 2013 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Stokes County on November 25, 1918 to Walter Walker and Sarah Elizabeth Jane (Sadie) Browder Bowman. She was a 1936 graduate of Germanton High School and a 1943 graduate of the City Memorial Hospital Training School for Nurses in Winston-Salem. She was a member of Corinth Church of Christ.
In March of 1944 she joined the U.S. Navy as a registered nurse. While in the Navy she met the love of her life, Joseph Wagner Hoffman, and they were married on June 8, 1945 in New York. After their discharge from the Navy in 1946 she and Joe returned to his hometown of Pittsburgh. There she enjoyed a career as a registered nurse working in area hospitals and as a private duty nurse. She was an avid golfer and especially proud of her hole in one. Joe preceded her in death on March 16, 2000. She moved to Heritage Woods Assisted Living in Winston-Salem in 2010.
Mrs. Hoffman is survived by two sisters: Mrs. Sara Johnson of Walnut Cove, NC and Ms. Sammie Bowman of Pueblo, CO; two half-brothers: J.W. Bowman of Pinnacle and Richard Bowman of King; two half-sisters: Juanita Anderson of Walnut Cove and Jeanette Simmons of King. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters: Hazel Shiners and Hilda Amacker; and four brothers: Bill, John, Jack and Rex Bowman.
A service to celebrate her life will be held at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Chapel at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 26, 2013. The family will receive friends following the service. Entombment will be at Allegheny County Memorial Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at a later date. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
