Mrs. Betty Jo Godwin Mitchell, 78, of Winston-Salem, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at her home, surrounded by her loving family. She was born January 5, 1932 in Memphis, TN to the late William Joseph Godwin and the late Ruth Henley Godwin. Mrs. Mitchell was a renowned local artist and her paintings have been exhibited in galleries throughout North Carolina. She specialized in floral still lifes, seascapes, and landscapes, and also portraits and sculpture. Her work was mainly in oils and watercolor. Mrs. Mitchell was educated at the Memphis Academy of Fine Arts where she received a Bachelor of fine arts degree in painting and sculpture. She also attended the University of Tennessee where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Art Education. Betty will be forever remembered by her family and friends as a loving wife and mother, and a talented artist who loved painting, gardening, music, and traveling to beautiful places. Surviving family includes her husband, William H. Mitchell; daughters, Alice G. Mitchell Marshall "Drew" and Margaret Ruth Mitchell; son, Robert Henley Mitchell; and granddaughter, Isabell R. Godwin Marshall. The family will visit with their friends on Monday, August 2, from 7 until 8 p.m. at the Vogler Funeral Home Reynolda Chapel, 2951 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106 (336-722-6106).
