Deby was born in Fort Lewis, Washington, on October 10, 1955. The daughter of a career military man, she spent her childhood moving from state to state and overseas.
After leaving Germany, upon her father’s retirement from the Army, she returned to the United States to finish her senior year of high school in Lake Wales, Florida. She then enrolled in and completed the nursing degree program at Polk State College in Winter Haven. Working in various hospitals in Florida and Kansas City, Missouri, she relocated to Winston-Salem in 1986 to work in the healthcare community there. This itinerant upbringing fostered an ability to easily communicate with everyone she came in contact with. The phrase “She never met a stranger.” certainly applies to Deby.
In addition to her ease with conversation, there was a profound sense of caring about her. She had a positive effect on everyone she came in contact with. That came, not only from her background and personality, but from her deeply-held faith in God. She is survived by her husband, Steve Carter, her daughters Emily and Kaleigh, parents, Eugene and Carolyn Hall, brother Mike and his wife Dianne and son Dane.
There will be a visitation on Saturday, January 18 from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Bethany Baptist Church, 600 Old Hollow Road, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Services will be from 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to the church.
