February 27, 1933 – March 2, 2025
Obituary of Donald Sutton Gardner
IN THE CARE OF

Vogler Funeral & Cremations at Forsyth Memorial Park

Donald Sutton Gardner passed away on March 2, 2025 in Winston Salem at the age of 92.

Donald was born on February 27, 1933 in Peoria, IL to the late Russell and Ruth Gardner. He went to attend Perdue University where he earned his Bachelor's degree and Master’s degree. Donald went to work in Tarrytown, NY for 30 years as a statistician for the General Foods Corporation. He then moved to North Carolina where he worked an additional 15 years at Ferguson Plumbing Supply, computerizing their systems.

Donald proudly served his country as a Navigator in the United States Air Force.

In his youth, Donald truly was the life of the party. He was sociable and always looking for a fun time. He loved basketball, fishing, playing and teaching bridge, and bowling. Donald was proud that he had a perfect score during one of his bowling games. In his later years, Donald became more reserved and more practical. He loved listening to music, especially classical and jazz.

In addition to his parents, Donald was preceded in death by his son, Timothy Russell Gardner, and sister, Joan Marie Grant. He leaves behind his wife of 38 years, Carol Blankenship Gardner; children, Thomas Carl Gardner, Matthew Frank Gardner, and Sara Jane Gardner (Jack) Branagan; 9 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and his four-legged companion and best friend, “Legs” a 14-year-old poodle.

A private memorial service will be held in July by the family.

Memorial contributions can be made in Donald’s honor to the American Heart Association.
