Donald Curtin Troup

Don was born and raised in New York, New York by the late Jerry Troup and Eileen Dalton. His fun loving, outgoing nature consistently resulted in pranks and jokes with his sister and brother, Patty and Brian. Don attended St. Mary’s Boys Preparatory High School, in Manhasset, NY, where he excelled in track and field. He was a member of the legendary “Magnificent Seven” track relay team, which still holds the state title to this day. Don then attended Fordham University, Rose Hill Campus in the Bronx NY, where he was an active member of the Fordham Rams cheer team, during which he orchestrated many a prank against Fordham’s arch-rival, Manhattan College. Don helped cover the expense of college by working in the Sherwin Williams retail store on Fordham Hill, Bronx, NY. His natural, easy going manner and outgoing personality allowed him to excel in this position, and helped him to discover his aptitude for sales. He continued working for Sherwin Williams, and this relationship fostered a successful sales career.

Don soon became Sherwin Williams’ “go to” remedy for sagging sales in east-coast markets. This caused Don and his growing family to be transplanted many times up and down the east coast over the years, depending on the needs of Sherwin-Williams. His last position brought Don to North Carolina, which he discovered was his favorite state to live by far. When asked by Sherwin Williams several years later to move back to New York once again, Don refused, leading to him leaving Sherwin Williams and beginning employment with Premier Coatings. Again Don excelled there in sales, thanks to his gregarious and outgoing nature. “He never met a stranger he didn’t like.“

Don enjoyed fishing, gardening, and was an avid golfer until an illness destroyed his right-sided coordination. Don was also an expert at trivia, and often entered competitions. His was usually on the trivia leaderboard, and his name was often spotted by his brother in another state!

Don was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Asheboro, North Carolina. He was also an active member of the Knights of Columbus. For his devotion to lessons of unity and fraternity, he received the full honors of Third Degree Knight.

Don is survived by his wife, Zadia “Dena” Troup; children, Chris (Kurt) Lewis, Kevin (Jennie) Troup; stepchildren, Renee (Michael) Ramsey, Pamela (Gerald) Anderson, and Jeffery (Erin) Skaggs; grandchildren, Hannah Lewis, Kara Lewis, Meghan Lewis, Samantha Troup, Mikayla Troup, Sara Wilson, and Raychel Jamieson; siblings, Dr. Brian (Karen) Dalton and Patricia Marcoe; and numerous nieces, nephews, loved ones, and friends.

While our hearts mourn his loss, the family takes comfort in knowing he is no longer suffering. A celebration of life for Don will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Knights of Columbus at www.Kofc.org
