She was also a dedicated businesswoman who started her career as an executive secretary at the Chrysler Corporation, before transitioning into law as a legal secretary. Once established in Winston Salem, she embarked on a very successful, decorated real estate career where she loved finding people their perfect home, while being heavily involved in a wealth of civic clubs, church groups, and community and philanthropic organizations, always lending her hand and talents to help others.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Charles A. Burkhart, MD as well as her two sons, William D. and David S. Burkhart. Surviving Florence is her son, Charles A. "Chuck" Burkhart II, and his wife, Anne; her daughter-in-law, Sue Poindexter; her grandchildren, Aric Burkhart (Karen) and Rebecca Burkhart MD (Jason); great grandchildren, Brittany Bennett and Jesse Scarboro; and great, great grandchild, Madeline Bennett. Also surviving Florence is her beloved dog, Roxy, along with a special cousin, Drake Ellis.

The family would like to recognize and thank the staff of Walnut Ridge Assisted Living. Mountain Valley Hospice, and those that provided caregiving services in the home over the years including for their care and attentiveness.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date with remains interred at the Centenary UMC Columbarium where she was a member. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be sent to Mountain Valley Hospice.
