Gregory Stewart Adams

January 17, 1953September 30, 2010

Gregory Stewart Adams, 57, of Winston-Salem, passed away Thursday, Sept. 30, at the Palliative Care Unit of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born Jan. 17, 1953, in Winston-Salem to Dr. and Mrs. H. Stewart Adams (both now deceased). As a young child, he enjoyed learning at the Graylyn Center for children with disabilities. At age 8 he moved to Murdoch Center for the mentally handicapped in Butner, NC. At age 40 he returned to Winston-Salem to live at Independence Group Home for more than 13 years. After that, he resided at Danby House at Homestead Hills Assisted Living, until a recent move to Grace Healthcare. Greg was a jolly fellow and made friends easily. He is known by all as a kind and generous soul. He had the amazing ability to adapt to new situations, even in his later years with several additional disabilities. He was an adventurous soul. He loved to dance, and was a great sports fan. He showed strength and courage when faced with numerous physical and mental challenges. He inspired us by his grace. He will bless the heavens as he has blessed us all here. Above all, Greg loved his friends and family. He is forever a beloved brother to his sisters: Becky Adams of Boulder, CO, Ginger Grimaldi (and husband Gene) of Clemmons, NC, and Susan Mead (and husband Richard) of Emigrant, MT. Also surviving are his niece, Genevieve Grimaldi (and baby son Jaden) of Winston-Salem, NC, and his nephew, Mark Miller of Boulder, CO. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the many friends, caregivers, and medical personnel who gave Greg their indispensable support and comfort. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, at Vogler and Sons Funeral Home, Reynolda Road Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial at Forsyth Memorial Park will follow the funeral service. Dear Ginger and "her big sisters". You may remember me as Pam Barrett. I loved your family so much and have many fond memories of being a little girl at your big dining room table, or in the hammock, or the "putt putt." Many years ago, when I was visiting Winston, where I still have family, I saw Greg at the stationery store at Sherwood. It was a grand reunion. This was SO long ago..... I remember your parents and the "cook" who made the best peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in the world. Who knew they were suppposed to include butter?

Greg will be missed by many. He had a way of putting a smile on your face with his great sense of humor. As a proud family member of Group Homes of Forsyth, he will be remembered as the President who was always in charge. My prayers are with the family and host of friends.

I was so sorry to hear of Greg's passing. I admitted Greg to the group home. Over the years I had the opportunity to get to know him well and thoroughly enjoyed his quirky sense of humor and his sweetness. My thoughts are with you, his family and friends, at this time of sadness.
