

Horace was preceded in death by his parents, D. O. and Madeline Slate and his son, DeVerne Slate.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Carol Naylor Slate of the home; a brother Kenneth Wayne Slate and wife Sherry; three daughters, Melanie Moser and husband Ronnie, Joy Brown and husband Brian “Tic”, and Michelle Russell and husband Patrick; five grandchildren, Morgan Adams and husband Ricky, Amber Hairford and husband Tanner, Sara Gammons and husband Chase, Troy Bottoms, Elijah Brown and Meredith Hailey; eight great-grandchildren, Jack, Levi, Wyatt, Mara and Elizabeth Adams, Oakes Hairford, and Knox and Ivy Gammons; niece and nephew, Misty Kelley and husband Jim, and Chad Slate and wife Elisabeth; and special sisters and brothers-in-law, Beverly Naylor and friend Richard and Adrian Naylor and wife Mary Scott.
Horace was a true Renaissance Man. He was an avid reader and original thinker. He was a pilot, a mechanic, an amateur Ham operator, a firefighter, a radio disc jockey, an educator, and a published author.
Horace retired as Personnel Manager from RJR Packaging Division in 1997.
He was a charter member of the Sauratown Volunteer Fire Department. He was instrumental in the founding of the Stokes County Fire and Rescue Associations and lead the way in the modernization of patient care at the scene.
He loved classic cars, motorcycles, NASCAR, and Ocean Isle Beach where he and Carol made their home for 21 years.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, June 23, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Vogler Funeral & Cremations - Forsyth Memorial Park, 3815 Yadkinville Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106. A Committal Service will follow in the park. Pastor Donald Davis will officiate.
