I was blessed to know Marie through her time at St. Anne's Episcopal Church. I was always intrigued by her presence for she was a formidable person but she also had sparkly blue eyes which told me there was a soft side to her. She was proud of her heritage and I was aware that she had sacrificed much to always do the right thing.
Her smile was something that always lifted my soul and I will miss seeing it.
I am sorry for your loss,

Carolyn Myracle

As we go to Marie’s gravesite today — the sun shining after the rain— I keep humming “Alleluia the great storm is over, lift up your wings and fly”. I want to thank the many caretakers Marie has had these last 14 years and most recently the Special workers including Kim Miller at Brookdale Senior living and of course the amazing group of Trellis Supportive services who have been by her side these last two years especially Diamond. Thank you St. Anne’s friends who have supported me by including Marie in your lives.
                     Thank You. Sandra Sheldon

I knew Marie when she was in her 90s. Sometimes when I visited with her she would ask me to help her out, usually with cleaning her pristine home. Once she told me to get a q-tip; I was then to wipe down the metal plates in her base-board heater! I managed three plates and then declared all was done and clean! She smiled and thanked me.
She had a hard life but always gave me a smile.

I knew Marie as a member of St. Anne's Episcopal Church. When we started there, Marie was already in her 90's, and we saw her only occasionally. Yet she was faithful and much loved.
One of our customs at Christmas is for parishioners to go around our neighborhood singing Christmas carols. Marie's house was near the church, and a couple of years ago we went to her house and sang "Silent Night" to her in her native German ("Stille Nacht"--the song was originally written in German). Marie's eyes shone as we did this, and in every later encounter she would express her gratitude for this simple act.
Marie was a faithful servant in so many ways. May she rest in peace and rise in glory.
Special thanks to her faithful friend and caretaker, Sandy Sheldon!

I had the honor of visiting Marie regularly as a volunteer with Trellis Supportive Care. She always entertained me with stories from her youth, memories of her native food and geography, and photos of many family members. We could talk for an hour without stopping! She had a mischievous sparkle when she criticized the facility's cooking or the weather and when I wrinkled my nose in agreement she would smile. I will miss our visits.

Mariechen,
Mariechen (the postfix "chen" behind a name is a term of endearment in German) and often her friends called her Mariechen.
Mariechen was my neighbor and she became my friend. We had much in common, we were both older than we wanted to be and we both hail back to Germany and as such spoke the same language.
Marie was a Sudetendeutsche (Sudetengerman) As I grew up in Germany after the war I heard on many occasions that people spoke about the Sudetendeutschen coming back to Germany as refugees, a term that sounded foreign to me and, as a child, caused me to wonder what was meant by it. Little by little Mariechen told me about her home as a German in Czechoslovakia, how they lived there for generations and how, during the end of the Second World War she, her family and the German communities there were unceremoniously expelled from Czechoslovakia and how eventually her family came to the USA. I was honored that Marie allowed me to chronical those events. Thus, I learned a lot about the life of the Lissner family and the difficulties of being uprooted and reestablished in a foreign land. Her life was full of existential challenges and, I expect she met those challenges with courage and faith. She lived with and cared for her parents until the end of their lives. Of course, she and I exchanged notes about the difference of life in Germany and America and she was not always in agreement of habits she encountered here. Such comparisons caused a lot of laughter and reflection and comradery and gratitude.
While she was always happy to see me come to visit her, she never made me feel neglectful or guilty when intervals between visits were long and I was very grateful for that.
Now I rejoice that her burdens are lifted and my belief allows me to think that her parents welcomed her to Eternity and that her soul has found her true home in love and peace. Rest in peace and happiness, Mariechen.

I was blessed to be Marie’s pastoral care committee contact person from St. Anne’s for nearly nine years, in part because my vocal range was one that she could hear more easily. With the exception of the COVID lockdown, I visited her monthly to bring her communion and spiritual encouragement and prayer and to offer my friendship and a connection with her church family. Being with Marie was like panning for gold. In the midst of rather mundane conversations, a nugget would suddenly appear as something I said made her break into laughter or trigger a memory. I will never forget the day she noticed the amber ring I was wearing and proceeded to tell me that she had been courted by a young man back in Germany whose family owned a tavern. The relationship did not develop perhaps because his mother did not think Marie had the right temperament to be a barkeeper’s wife! I treasured the excuse she gave me to explore my German background in more depth as I researched the customs for various religious holidays in that tradition. I will always remember her reciting the Lord’s Prayer in German and taking great delight in the St. Anne’s Christmas carollers singing “Stille Nacht” at her door. As I said in my remarks at her graveside service, Marie taught me much about faithful discipleship in her sacrificial love for her parents for whom she devotedly cared all their lives and in her persistent trust in God’s providential goodness as she dealt with the challenges of declining health and diminished independence and homesickness for the land of her birth and for her sisters who lived at such a great distance from her. I miss her greatly, but I rejoice that she has been released from her earthly suffering and I look forward to being reunited with her at the heavenly banquet table one day.

Goodbye Marie. You have left me with a wealth of information about German rye bread, German schnitzel, and poppyseed cake. I will always remember the cups of tea we shared along with wonderful stories. I loved those times and you. I will miss you.

When I first moved to my house next to Marie, she was one of the first to welcome my family and me into the neighborhood. From that day on, I learned so much about Marie. I learned about what her life was like when she was younger with her family, and what it was like to come to the US from Germany. She loved to tell me stories from when she was younger. She would always sit in her sunroom when it was nice out, and if she saw me, she would call me. I would go talk to her, and she always told me a different story to tell everytime i saw her. Then in the summers, when I would cut her grass, she would sit in her sunroom and watch me cut the grass while she sat and either had something to snack on or some sort of newspaper or magazine. May you eternal rest in peace, Marie. We will forever miss you.

I visited with Marie in her home and quickly learned that she kept it clean and organized . Everything had a place! One time she complained to me about the clutter of cooking/baking dishes under her wall oven . She asked me to find a way to make it neat and organized . I built and installed a set of roll-out drawers that woukd allow the contents of this cabinet space to be neatly stored and easily accessible for her. When I showed her the finished solution, she got a big smile on her face and was so thrilled that that problem had been solved! I will miss her sense of humor, her stories and our conversations!

I will miss seeing Marie. What can I say about her. She was an amazing woman. Her life during the war was not easy. She lived a simple yet complete life. She was friecely independent. She always donated to the charities near to heart. I am truly grateful for time I had working with her. I know she is resting in eternal peace. My sincere condolences to all her friends and family. She cared for us all.

It was a sad day this Valentines day - My friend Marie Lissner - quietly passed away at over 100 years old - She was a special lady and did it her way as long as she was able - my time helping her was short but I will always remember her - she gives me license to embrace my grumpiness as a badge of honor - and taught me things can always be a little cleaner - RUHE IN FRIEDEN Marie

Mariechen was bright, meticulous and honest to a fault. She had a hard life. She lived her life caring for her parents and after they died she took care of herself with few friends and no relatives in America. She lived on her own until she was 98. Never forgetting her”home country” or her sisters. She kept a beautiful home and liked everything German. 100 years of doing things her way—she will always be in our hearts.

Ms. Marie,
I remember meeting you in your home to help with smoke detectors. We were trying to make sure we could install an alarm that could be seen in an emergency for hearing impaired. Each time I saw you Marie, you were pleasant and kind. I enjoyed spending time with someone who lived a century. It was just a blessing to be in your presence. I want everyone i meet to live forever (selfish trait of mine). However, I would rather people not live in this world in pain.
So with all that said, you touched me. I wish you eternal rest in peace. My you be remembered by everyone you met.
Sincerely,
Wesley Linton

My beautiful firecracker! You will be missed. I will cherish all the stories you shared with me! Until we meet again. Love Diamond
