OBITUARY

Mary Sutton Wilson Dorn

March 26, 1942 – June 18, 2026
Obituary of Mary Sutton Wilson Dorn
IN THE CARE OF

Vogler Funeral & Cremations at Forsyth Memorial Park

Mary Sutton Wilson Dorn, 84, went to her heavenly home on June 18, 2026, surrounded by her family.

Mary was born in Ridgeland, SC, to Waylon B. Wilson and Mary S. Wilson. She was a proud graduate of St. Andrews Parish High School (1960) in Charleston, SC; the University of South Carolina (1964); and The Citadel, where she earned her master’s degree.

Mary was a dedicated mathematics teacher for 40 years. She began her career at James Island High School. She went on to teach for nearly 20 years at Ashley Hall in Charleston. She later taught at West Ashley High School, the successor to her alma mater, St. Andrews Parish High School, until her retirement in 2004.

“Mrs. Dorn” remembered her students long after the classroom. She valued the letters they sent as they continued their education, built careers and started families. Her family and her students were the center of her world.

Mary lived in Charleston for most of her adult life before moving to North Carolina, where she spent her final years close to family. She enjoyed working in her yard, quilting, was an avid reader, and was always ready to watch a USC-Clemson football game or a Duke-UNC basketball game.

Mary is survived by her children, the Rev. James M. Dorn III (Janette); Bettye Dorn (Bill); and Mary Itha Trantham (Tim); six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and her brother, Waylon B. Wilson Jr. (Susie).

In accordance with her wishes, no formal services will be held. A memorial honoring her memory will be placed alongside her parents at Elmwood Cemetery in Columbia, SC.
