Mary was born in Staten Island on May 1, 1942 to the late Frederick and Katherine Dimelow Fichtmueller.
She was incredibly brilliant. Mary attended Staten Island Academy. She went to study at university in Missouri and later at Yale University. Mary’s astuteness landed her a membership with MENSA. She went to work with NASA at RCA Space Center as a Quality Control Inspector. She took a break from the workforce to raise her three sons, and then returned to work with her husband. They owned a business in Freehold, NJ drilling water wells and Mary ran all the administration and bookkeeping for the business.
Mary was a devout Lutheran. Her religion and faith were very important to her.
Mary’s yearning for knowledge continued throughout her life and she pursued many hobbies for herself. She received her North Carolina Real-estate License. Mary drew and designed the plans for two of the homes her family built and lived in. She volunteered in night court, doing arbitration for the court system and she was a notary public. She served as the volunteer secretary for Nazareth Lutheran Church in Rural Hall, NC. Mary was an avid beekeeper and kept hives in both New Jersey and North Carolina and she and Frank made their own honey for many years. The role Mary loved most of all and cherished above all was the role of grandma. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, and doting grandmother.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her sons, David Longman and Dan Longman.
Mary leaves behind her husband of 56 years, Frank Longman; son, Jeffrey (Kristen) Longman; daughter-in-law, Dawn Longman; grandchildren, Iselle, Morgan, Kaylee, and Mio (formerly Shelby); dog, Molly; and parrot, Mike.
A celebration of Mary’s life will be held on Saturday, February 17th at 2pm at Vogler Funeral & Cremations. The family will receive friends for visitation following the service at the home of Dawn Longman.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Trellis Supportive Care.
