Paul will be remembered as a stoic and dignified man who was caring and loyal. He was a true family man.
He was born in Winston-Salem on December 15, 1942, to the late Paul and Elsie McCarthy. He graduated from Reynolds High School. After high school, Paul went on to study at the Ringling School of the Arts in Sarasota, Florida. He was a gifted artist and Senior Illustrator who was highly regarded by his peers. Paul’s talents were on display in his long career with Sterling Advertising, the In-House Agency for Lowe’s Hardware.
Paul proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was stationed at Long Binh Air Base.
He dedicated his life to his family. Paul cared for his mother as she got older; and later, he tended to his wife, Charlene, through her fights with cancer. He enjoyed time with his son, Paul McCarthy, III. Paul never hesitated to take his son to whatever skatepark they could find, traveling across the state to ensure his son was able to do what he loved.
Paul was a man of faith and a devout Catholic. He attended St. Leo’s Catholic Church during his younger years and then Holy Family Catholic Church in Clemmons with his wife and son. His love of God was expressed through his love for others.
He leaves behind his wife of 33 years, Charlene Thomas McCarthy, his son, Paul Burley McCarthey, III and several in-laws with the Thomas Family; and numerous other family members and friends.
Paul will be laid to rest at Forsyth Memorial Park in Winston-Salem.
